My beloved 21 yo arab has been diagnosed with Ringbone. On Friday I took him to have nerve blocks and X-rays. The X-rays show that the ringbone is much worse than we thought.

I have two treatment choices, either inject directly into the site of the Ringbone or operate to fuse the bone.

i am sitting here trying to pluck up the courage to call the vet regarding the operation to find out more, but i am not sure i want to put him through this. Has anyone had any experience of the fusing op?

I am totally prepared to retire him as long as he is happy if that is the best thing for him but i dont want to give up if the injections or op are a viable option.

He has had a hard life and before i got him and clocked up several miles so even if i can 'fix' the ringbone issue, some other problem could stop his ridden work.

I would not have an operation done for ringbone personally.

Was it low or high - articular or non articular.

At 21 I'd go for the injections, and either a quieter life for full retirement.

Agree totally with Amy May

I can sympathise though as one of my mares has ring bone - I am just weaning her foal before I have the xrays done to see the extent of the damage

Good luck with whatever you decide. x

We decided against the operation for our pony even though he was young at the time. It was about 8 years ago so maybe the outcomes are better now, but at the time they didn't seem to justify putting him through it. PS he has been happily retired since.

Thanks everyone. You have confirmed my thinking.

I spoke to the vet who would carry out the op and he has suggested a couple of other alternatives. He has suggested Tildren, does anyone have any experience of that?

Or Pernamax?

My mare had High ringbone and it was articular I think. She had the injections but sadly they didnt work, she was retired at 8 yrs old on low dose of bute. I wouldnt have the op though, not at his age, Id give the injection a go as what ever the outcome you are happy to retire him
