Has anyone ever come across ringworm from rats? Four horses on the yard have broken out with ringworm. They have not been in contact with any other horses, left the yard had any cows near them. There is a steam running near the yard so we have a problem with rats, vets says he is 90% sure thats where the prob is from. Has anyone else come across this.?

ewww, no. more likely to be off an old winter rug or something that's been got out of storage and has it on from a different horse last year, i'd say. are they young horses?
i took a young horse to a yard somewhere and he came out in ringworm. apparently it was in the wood of the stable, all the older resident horses already had immunity to it, it was only newbies that went down with it sometimes.

Do you have MTG available to you? If not then I would advise you order some in from the States. It's made by Shapleys. It is fantastic at killing off the bacteria. Either that or Povidone Iodine does a decent job but is very messy.

I've never heard of it being transmitted by rats to be honest, however if horses are low on their immunities then they can come out in it.

Ringworm, to my knowledge, only has a fairly short life-span so it's not something to get too worked up about.......however keeping these horses away from others is paramount because it is contagious.
