Hi guys

My poor little mare has been diagnosed with ringworm and is now in issolation in her stable which she hates under normal circumstances

All I can say is that thank god we put her on a magnesium supplement to try and get her to settle in the stable three weeks previous otherwise I would have no stable left!!

Can anyone tell me what signs will indicate that has cleared up? Is it when all the scabs have gone and the skin looks normal - not that it looks red at all or do we have to wait until the hair is growing back?

Any guidance would be great as the vet talked to the YM and not me so have not been told at what stage she can return to the outdoors!!

Cheers peps

Wrong forum. But, what treatment are you using? It'll be about 1-2 weeks. I think it was two washes after it had started spreading when mine had it, which was about 5-6 days.

If you've seen the vet and he has given you imaverol, he should have told you how long to keep the horse apart, and I would phone him if he didn't.

When my horse had ringworm, the vet told me the imaverol would kill it within a couple of applications, but to keep applying it for a week, and I don't remember keeping her in at all, or if I did it can't have been more than a day or two.

The sign it has cleared up is when it stops spreading. It will be dead before the coat grows back which takes a while longer but she won't be infectious.

As imaverol is diluted 1:50 it goes a very long way so if your horse has passed it on, it's a useful medication to have on the yard. You can also spray the stable and you need to fungicide your grooming kit.

yeah i worked on a dealers yard and we had about 8 horses with it at one time. i would say if you are applying the imaverol, your horse can go out. just keep lathering it on even when you think its cleared up. also disinfect your grooming kit and stable with something strong. we used jayes fluid, otherwise the horse will just transfer it back to itself. and also disinfect numnahs/girths/ bridle. even whips can pass it on. just disinfect horse and everything else excessively and it does go away in the end!
good luck x
