This is for a little staffie girl who was PTS this morning. She was about a year old (they think) and was PTS as her time was up at the pound and they could not find a space in Rescue. Very pretty little brindle girl.

So while it might appear I get on my high horse with people who think about breeding or think that rescues aren't good enough, the reality is of the sad photos of yet another perfectly healthy young dog which has had to have been destroyed.

May your pain be over and I hope you are in a better place little girl.

Very, very sad. :( I hate kill shelters with a passion and how do you know she would have been in for years? If given a proper chance, she might have been adopted to a lovely home.

What a tragic waste of life.

LML, 'kill shelter' is an Americanism - almost every council pound in the UK has a PTS policy - the ones here give the dogs at least seven days to be reclaimed, rehomed, or sold. It's happening down the road from everyone. The pounds are council facilities, they do not have unlimited space for all the dogs being dumped/allowed to stray.

Very sad, and happening all over the country, RIP Gem. This is why I don't think its always the best thing when rescues spend a lot of money on veterinary treatment or behavioural training for older dogs with problems, thus filling kennel space so a young healthy dog has nowhere to go.:(
 
Unfortunately Springy whereas the decent breeders (whose pups are probably less likely to end up in rescue) are cutting down, the numpty byb are just cashing in and churning out more!
 
So sad and so maddening:mad: and the breeders and those who purchased her wont give 2 ****s:mad::mad:, she is now gone from this world after no time at all and many many more will suffer her fate until this poxy government regulate breeding and people stop feeding the back street puppy market.
 
I honestly dont think that many people realise that the pounds have this 7 day ruling. Some do try to hang on and rehome, most won't rehome to the general public (wisely) only rescue, some won't even try rescues they simply observe the ruling. I am not having a dig at the pounds - they are over run with dumped and unwanted dogs. The people who try to pull these dogs out are volunteers trying to network and sometimes they succeed.

And sometimes, or rather a lot of the time, they can't find a space and a young dog like Gem is PTS. RIP little one. Your photo was heartbreaking and you looked so scared...

It's a shame they just give the 7 days and the rescue centres cannot rehome them all - although quite strange a rescue couldn't have taken her if she was young and rehomable? I know the guys at our Dogs Trust despair when they do the pound trips as they have to pick the ones who they think they can rehome and try and take those that are nearing the 7 day limit. It must be a horrid job having to decide. It must be even more horrid a job having to PTS healthy pups just because their time is up. Shame on those who breed indiscriminately and shame on those who dump these pups :(
 
It's amazing the people who dump their pets on the pound thinking they will 'get a lovely home in the farm in the country' and walk away with their fingers in their ears singing 'lalalalalala'. And usually go out and get a new dog not long after.

Also the amount of people who cannot tell the difference between pounds and rescues.
If your dog goes to the pound, there's a likelihood that it's going to die within a week or two.

Don't blame the pounds, they are not meant to home a lot of dogs and these places are just overun. And a rescue can't take more dogs if they are full.. what do they, PTS one they already have? Gem is not an unusual story, a lot of these dogs are really young, as in just moving out of the cute cuddly puppy stage. Last night friends were on overdrive to try to pull another 6 month bitch out from a pound and they did find a place but these people are volunteers, they can not keep clearing up other peoples mess all the time. Last time I was involved with Welfare on a frantic drive to save a lovely 2 year old SBT bitch, whose family were losing their home. The clock was literally ticking. It took Welfare, myself and 3 others 48 hours of calling, sharing, contacting rescue etc. Yes we did it, but we all have full time job and our own commitments. There is no safety net for these poor dogs, its in the luck of the draw if they survive.

My sister lost her staffie bitch, as underestimated that as as puppy grew, the 4 foot fencing might not be high enough. The dog warden had her, cue 1 incredibly grateful sister who had gone demented trying to find her dog. Sadly, the dog warden was actually surprised that someone had gone so flat out to find a missing staffy. Fencing is now 6 foot and said dog has had some pretty intensive training to reinforce boundaries..
