Sadly, George Washington has suffered a fatal injury on the racetrack during The Breeders Cup tonight, and has been pts. Apparently, Aiden O'Brien was with him very soon after he was injured and there was no hope of GW being able to be saved.
Such a sad end to his career

Apparently so

Screens were up almost immediately so it must have been a bad break..........

Tragic irony is he was bred by the same people who bred Barbaro

The conditions over there have been terrible although it's unlikely that had anything to do with it, just added to a miserable time for the European horses.

RIP George Washington

An extract from an article about Curlin's victory today - taken from the MSNBC website...

"The victory was tempered by yet another horrifying breakdown in one of racing’s biggest events. With Curlin and jockey Robby Albarado crossing the finish line, George Washington was in distress after shattering his right front ankle.

A brown screen was brought out on the track to prevent the fans from watching, and the 4-year-old colt was put down at the request of trainer Aidan O’Brien.

“He had a fracture in his ankle and dislocated his ankle. That’s a hopeless injury,” said Larry Bramlage, the track’s on-call veterinarian. “The trainer requested that he immediately be euthanized.”

Larry is an awesome guy as well as an awesome vet!

Funny how I still call fetlocks ankles......

Mick Kinane paid the horse a tribute, saying 'He did well to stay up. He saved me.' Apparently the horse tried to carry on as Mick pulled him up and got off.

Yep, that's about right. though he was totally out of contention when it happened and was no longer going flat out - would have been totally different if he had been.....

The horses. I think the jockeys are brave but they have chosen to do it. Mind, I think they were all brave on that dirt track today with water and s**t being thrown in their faces (that's horses and jockeys).

His sesamoid bones broke.

I'm gutted, he was a real superstar, a bit of a freak, the way he won the guineas even after wandering about was amazing. He had awesome power, and it is so hard to believe that such a vibrant and beautiful horse is gone in a flash.
For the trainer to have brought him back to track after stud is incredible in itself, and the way he used to talk about him shows how much he cared about George.
Poor A O'B, what a horrible, horrible night for him.

RIP, 'Gorgeous'..........

Sad end to a great horse. Gorgeous George.

He looked to be struggling through the first turn. All the American horses used to racing on dirt coped well running on an inside lead but he checked back and went the whole turn on an outside lead.

Those tracks are like glue to run on when sloppy, the top is just slop and then get down a few inches and it feels like it could suck off your boots.

RIP georgeous george. he was one of the most talented and enigmatic 3yos we have seen for a long time, he was a superstar and along with kieren they made the perfect team. its such a sad loss...i dont know what else to say apart from he was a superstar, there will never be another one like him, and aidain must be heartbroken.

There's a horrible pic on Reuters, I've no idea how he didn't fall, the foot is all twisted inwards............. as MK said, a very brave horse to stand up with him.

GW was a disaster from the start yesterday. He would not go through the gap, was terrible with the pony, and he looked awful racing. Why he was even in the BCC is beyond me, he is a miler on the turf!!

He had an open fracture, and from what people said it looked awful!!

A great horse who failed at stud, hardly came back to race this year, and everything looking so bad yesterday sounds like the cash out option to me.

The pictures I've seen certainly didn't look good(obviously), and I agree, he didn't move very well on the track at all
