Porkie
Well-Known Member
Passed away earlier this evening. Little chestnut gelding.
Aged 43
I didn't really know him, but have been concerned about his welfare recently after seeing him and a few others in a field hidden from most peoples view, seen only by those on my yard when we ride round our fields. (which we have only just started doing so only just discovered them!) He and his friends were/are extremely emaciated.
I decided I should try and find out a bit about them before I went running into reporting them as neglect cases. As they do appear to have water and hay etc.
Tonight we found him lying on the floor in his field unable to get up, but still alive as he tried to lift his head when we called him. Called YO who went round to premises next door and they thanked us for alerting them. Turns out he rescues elderly horses and ponies and cares for them so they are not left abandoned. Every horse in his care is over 30, most nearer 40! He keeps them in this field now away from the public eye so people don't keep reporting him!
He said he had only been up to field a little over an hour before to fill waters and hay and Sparkey had seemed OK. He called the vet and they sat with him.
I'm glad I didn't just go and report him for neglect as it turns out he really is a caring man trying to help these old horses.
And thankfully as we decided to ride round the fields tonight he wasn't down for long, its horrible to think if we hadn't he might have suffered all night.
And Sparkey didn't die alone. RIP Sparkey.
