My Grandpa passed away last night peacefully after a long and distressing illness. He was 90 years old.
The reason I am posting is because he has influenced, guided and encouraged me with horses all through my life. He bought my aunt ponies when she was younger and he was a very old-school pony club parent. My Dad would never buy me a pony because he said they took up too much time - he said my Grandpa spent too much time with the ponies and not enough with him! Grandpa was always very keen to hear about how I was getting on with my riding and came to see my first horse, even though he was in a wheelchair. He often chatted to me, asked how my horse was getting on and offered advice on horsey things.
Even towards the end when his dementia was really bad, as soon as you mentioned horses or dogs he would snap back into being himself and talk like he used to, just for a short time before he became confused again. He had lots of pictures of horses and dogs in his room in the old-people's home.
I hope wherever he is now he is with my Nana, surrounded by the horses and dogs he loved.

RIP to your Grandpa.

Its so lovely he influenced you in such a way, as a carer I love it when I find something my dementia clients can click on to and we can have a great chat. Often it is animals, mostly dogs and horses. Hope your ok, may he rest in peace.

Lovely to hear about your grandpa, even in such sad circumstances. A wonderful age to reach too. RIP.
