I came home this morning to find my old ex racer on her side panting and clearly very distressed for the second time this week. She'd been on the maximum dose of painkillers and nothing was helping her. Couldn't contact OH so called my vet friend and we decided to let her go at home. I held her head and said goodbye.

The racing industry broke this poor girl who we took on five years ago. I hope she's running again now.

I dont know what to tell my son when he gets home from nursery.

So sorry to hear this, but sounds like you made the right decision for your girl. I am sure she is chasing bunnies again now. In my experience of breaking such sad news to children it is best to just be honest, hug him and have a weep together.

So sorry for your loss. I'm sure she had five wonderful years with you and is running to her hearts content. I've always been straight with my daughter when we have lost loved ones (human and animal). Children are very accepting and open regarding death, they will have a cry and carry on with life.

Thank you. I have told him. No euphamisms and i said she had died. I told him that her body was broken and didn't work any more. That animals break more easily sometimes and she was a very old lady. He covered his eyes and ears as I was talking, sat cuddling me in silence while i cried and he sat for about ten minutes then jumped up and asked to play a game. He has seen me cry before when a fox got my hens and I explained it was a bit like that.

He then wanted to check all our other pets so I encouraged him to do that and he seems fine.

It"s me who needs a bit of time now. Luckily husband now home so has taken him off to play.

Ahhh animals eh.......

So sorry to read this, but sounds like you made the right if hard decision. It just never gets any easier, as I get older I'm sure I grieve over lost pets more.

Children often take these things better than adults, when mine were little and one of our cats was knocked down they just wanted to touch him and then went off to play.

Hugs to you though. Be proud of the five happy years you gave her.
