My poor girlie has a nasty looking slash to her claw on her third digit about half way up the nail, she must have done it tearing about on our walk earlier because she was fine before we went this morning. She is wimpering and obviously in pain. I am taking her to the vets at 4 but just wondering what they are likely to do? The tear is so far up the nail that to clip it off you would takeout half of the quick. Plus she hates the vets........urgh, not looking forward to this!

I'd think it was more than likely they'll clip it short to wear the tear is and then styptic pencil it if it's low enough. Maybe you'll get lucky and they can glue it? Worst case scenario they'd have to remove the nail. But I doubt it unless it's way up high.

That's the prob, the tear is half way up the quick, will they sedate her? If not she is going to go mental! Will let you know how we get on!

Welcome to my world for the last 4 months!! H snapped his nail in half. antibiotics, painkillers and had to be covered on walks for a month. Then he resplit it a month ago and back to square one. So frustrating!

If she's likely to go mental, I would imagine for everyone's safety they'll sedate. Hmm, she's bound to be back by now - you said appt at 4?

So what happened? How'd it go?

Vet said because there was no bleeding and the nail wasn't hanging off or at an obscure angle to just leave it and let it grow out, Gave me painkillers and sent me on my way! She was better behaved than I thought she would be, just a big wimp and clambering all over me, hiding her face so she didn't have to look at the vet lol! Although made friends with him as soon as the treat tin came out :D

Oh no! Do you find that once the nail has been damaged it weakens it or have you just had really bad luck?! I fear this might only be the beginning of a life of ripped nails, the way she tears around on walks, skidding and turning at stupid angles.....

I really have no idea :(

He snapped his nail horizontally, but there was a vertical crack too. The V one had all but grown out when he resplit it the 2nd time :(

I don't know if he has weak nails, I expect so. It is certainly weakened where is was damaged and not grown out fully. I scoured the internet and have put him on a course of doggy biotin which I'll do for at least 6 months. Hopefully it will help.

Did they tell you to cover it when out and about? I found that the worse thing about the problem.

He didn't say anything about covering it, do you think I should? It's a horizontal crack about half way up the nail but not deep enough to have caused any bleeding. God I'm going to have to be so careful with her though, no ball chasing for a while it could so easily crack further but the vet was pretty blasé about the whole thing!

Is the split down to the quick? It's the risk of infection that is the issue....

I've only just found a boot that stays on off lead!! For ages it was on lead with all sorts of things stuck on his foot!
