Hi guys am looking for some advice really. My dog jumped off the boat yesterday and we think caught both front paws on the rudder, and ripped a small bit off each front paw main pad.

She is very sore walking and prefers to not put weight on back of paw (where pad is ripped) and has been pretty stationary all day. Understandably she is very sore and won't let anyone near her front paws. She can walk and from what I have been able to feel I don't think she has broken any toes from quick checks.

She is starting meta cam for the pain and I have had ice packs on her paws which helped with the pain sufficiently to allow me to have a better look at her paws and she has tore about a penny size piece off each one.

Is there anything else I can do to help her? Or any advice, would be very much appreciated! :)

My GSD did something similar running mountain bike trails with me. It was only one leg though.

Depends how deep the skinned piece is.If you can see any subcutaneous tissue it's a vet job, if not it's a case of keeping it clean and keeping her comfy.

For my boy I cleaned the wound thoroughly, got his food ready and while he was eating it I picked the paw up and sprayed it with spray on plaster. This does sting as I know from trying it on myself so I don't recommend if this bothers you, the dog or if the cut is deep. Then, fully treated up, I smeared on plenty of savlon and packed the pad with cotton wool pads. Then I put an elastic bandage round and a sock on top to keep it clean and keep everything in place.

Please note this is not medical advice in any way, just what worked for us in a not very deep cut; we didn't need metacam, but my lad is quite tough having run about 3m before even showing any lameness. Young man was right as rain quite quickly, the pads do recover well in my experience. If in any doubt it's time for the vet!

Thank you :)

I don't think there is any subcutaneous tissue showing, it is red and raw but appears to be only the top hard layer ripped off.

Spray on plaster sounds like a good idea! I have spray on skin somewhere so that might do the job. Not sure a sock would work with her as she would probably just take it off (she is normally a bit funny about her paws) but will give it a go, and maybe try a small compeed blister over the area?

Dirt wise I don't think it's deep enough to cause issues but will try tubbing her paws tomorrow to make sure clean.

Glad to hear they healed ok with you boy, she is a bit of a wuss anyway so met a cam is more for comfort really :)

My girl took the top layer of skin off 1 of her front main pads (about a third of the pad) about one and a half weeks ago, it was red raw when she did it (and for about 2 days), she was a little lame for about 2 days. I kept her crate rested for a week to stop her running around on it (she is a crazy Border Collie), cleaned it with hibiscrub (salt water would do if you haven't got hibi) and put activon manuka honey on it a few times a day. It has healed really well, I let her compete in her jumping classes this weekend (10 days after), I didn't want her doing the contacts as didn't want her to injure the new skin. I have KC Int Agility Festival next week and will probably put paw wax on her feet as an extra protection as then have Flyball Summer Champs the week after!

one f ur sogs did this, dipping paws in wound cleaner then smearing vaseline on the rest of the paw then spray on plaster worked a treat!
