Ive a number of horses that have ripped there rugs. To get them fixed its actually cheaper to buy new rugs. Ive tried duck taping the little holes. This did not work. Ive a few old rugs I could cut patches of and glue them over the holes. But what glue? Sowing worked but it took ages! Would tent glue work?

Aquasure from the diving shop is fantastic. My repairs are still holding strong and waterproof.

I have also used it to repair turnout boots with good results.

Stormsure is best, but quite pricey. Remember to leave it under pressure (a brick on top does it) for 24 hours for a good bond. Wilkinsons do a range of own brand glues for leather, rubber, waterproof, etc etc which aren't too bad, but Stormsure is the best.

We always have a tube of stormseal ready in the fridge. It's called stormsure as well I think... My hubby fixes his wetsuits with it too.

I tape up hole on inside with duct tape. Then cut a patch from an old rug and glue it on with stormseal. Then go round the edges of the patch on the outside with the stormseal too for a good seal. Then put something heavy on it til it dries. I dust it off with talc so it's not sticky on the outside.
I have patches that I have done like this that have stayed on for years. So it's worth taking time over it. It's not cheap stuff but cheaper than a new rug!

My other half used to do a few fixes for me using fishing wire.

But there is a local lady that does excellent repairs at very good prices.

But as you said after a while its easier to buy a new one!

I use to use Stormsure - but have discovered a local rug repair service that will clean and repair rugs at a very reasonable cost, so if it isn't urgent (e.g. I have a spare) I tend to use them instead.

As he is a bit of a serial rug ripper, all Pete's turn out rugs are 'patchwork quilts' now - but still functional, so I'm afraid he gets turned out in them looking like a bit of a wally! :D

i hand sew mine with strong thread before using storm sure glue over the top. Held tight on all my rugs so far :)

I also raid the skip at the yard for any thrown out rugs and cut the straps, clips etc off them and take cuttings of the fabric to use if i need to (although i hate patching rugs, prefer to sew an glue)

I just spent the last 2 hours sewing back on the strap at the front of one of my stable rugs, blooming horses.

The most annoying part is that he pulled it off with his teeth!

Personally I would place a square under the rug, sew it on and then glue round the edges to seal it.

Have been looking for the answer to this question for years !

Have tried hot glue gun, gaffer tape, hot glue & gaffer tape .....

Thank you. :)

I hand sew mine and use a glue gun .. just put a little hot glue over the stitches and spread it a little while hot..it has lasted 3 years, and survived being jet washed with an industrial jet wash..cheap and easy.

This rug was about two weeks old when it got totally trashed, it was originally a full neck, but I had to sacrifice the neck for the patches . I used the straps to mend a weatherbeata, looks a bit odd with rhino straps on a weatherbeata but the neck gave me patches to repair this rug , the weatherbeata and another rug, so it was worth doing!

Fishing twine and rubber glue is what I use, nearly out of that so might look at storm sure as I've one rug that's in bits but still useable and sewing it will take me weeks ;)

Wetsuit glue works for me :) if its just a straight rip I stitch and glue over the top, but holes need a patch which I usually stitch on and glue over the stitching. The wetsuit glue is great, it's like rubber when it dries so nice and waterproof, and the stuff I get is fairly cheap online too and a tube lasts ages :)
