Ripping other horses rugs! what can I do?

One of my horses has taken to grabbing the rear of other horses rugs, he has been doing this for a while and I have tried various things; cribbox spray on the rugs / neem oil on the back of the rugs / no bite spray....However on Tuesday mum told me that he had managed to completly rip the turnout rug off off my pony.
He does seem to only pick on the smaller pony as the others kick out, the poor pony is so soft and my big lad just follows him round grabbing the back of his rug all the time.

Although there is not much grass at the moment I do put lots of hay out for them, he is in at night and out all day.

I can seperate him off into another field on his own but as i only have 2 fields and 3 horses this would mean i cant rest one.

If anyone has any helpful advice please let me know :O)
 
The biggest hope you have of stopping this behaviour is little pony deciding enough is enough and having a pop at him!

Sorry no useful advice here but at least they are your own rugs he is trashing :p
 
Maybe a grazing muzzle, plus plenty of hay at night to make up for making it more difficult to eat during the day?
 
I feel your pain I have a rug removing tearing beast .
His latest crime was to remove the precious child's best premier equine out side rug hood and all then puddle in the mud while tearing it I found him with stuffing in his mouth wearing his best " who me no I never saw it before in my life " expression.
 
I had this problem last year. Weirdly it's stopped *touch wood* I tried the same sort of things as you have. Resorted to a muzzle which he wrecked the first day so I kept a tough old l/w turnout and pony wore it over his decent rugs. It looked hideous but did save nicer rugs being constantly ripped. It's depressing isn't it!
 
The Robinsons catalogue used to sell a plastic contraption that fits to a headcollar and prevents the ripper getting hold of the rugs. It was about £12don't know if they still sell it.

What damage he could do left in charge of a headcollar and a plastic bib I can't bear to think of .
 
if you have a proper agri merchants, i have used a product in the past which is originally for pigs to prevent them chewing each others tails. the name escapes me, but it worked 100%
 
My rug ripper ripps the backs out of the rugs of the horses he's in with and the necks out of the rugs of the horses over the fence. NOT amused with him and will be interested to see how the anti pig chew stuff works.
