How are you rising 3yr olds looking?
Am still not 100% sure my boy will be big enough for me, he's still looking like he needs alot more filling out to do which am hoping will happen during the summer! although his legs are chunky and he's bum high slightly i have my doubts!! he is around 14.2/14.3 mark (approx) welsh D. His sire a good 15hh his dam 14.3hh.
He will be 3 in may, was hoping to back him in the summer then turn him away winter, but looking at him now he doesn't seem ready to me? He has been bitted and worn full tack and did a bit of long reining in the autumn but nothing serious.
I have just spent rather a large amount on getting him gelded as he had a retained testicle - he is very nice though, a lovely personality very laid back and is fairly well bred.
Am planning to get him out this year do a bit of inhand stuff.
I was told he should make a full up 14.3hh, my other cob is around 15.1 now and she was around the same height as him in her 3rd year and she has bulked out loads and looks like a mini tank - am hoping he will do the same........but not sure!
Am 5ft10 so quite tall, weigh around 10st 9
Do you think he will have much more growing height wise?!!

Also how are your rising 3yr olds looking and what are your plans for them this year?

My lad is just turned 3 (he's a january foal). He's been sat on a couple of times and taken for a 10 minute walk up to the ford:

He's shot up in the last month or so, so not being ridden till he evens out - probably over summer. No plans to do much more than the odd little hack and desensitisation work.

eta, I'm 5'8, he's 13,3ish in that pic. Now probably 14hh. Hoping he will pick up another inch or so and bulk out a lot with age. My now 6 y/old highland certainly has since he was 3 (when I first got him).

I shall back my haffy in the summer (she is 3 in April) , play with her a bit during the summer and see how she goes, probably let her then have the winter off.

Mine is three and half. Backed her last week she was super! :) first hack next week if the rain stays off and hopefully working towards walk/trot dressage test in the summer. I may show her in hand again this year too. She seems to enjoy going to a party!

He's going through a lanky (as lanky as a cob gets!) stage at the mo. I did a bit of long-reining with him last year and took him out led from my other horse, probably do a bit more of that. I have sat on him twice (shoot me now!) but I'm not going to back him properly until late summer, maybe autumn depending on how he goes.

I brief vid of him being a berk with his chums. The headcollar wasn't my fault-OH put them out!

If i could give one piece of "advice" it's if they're not ready, they're ready!

I've got two ex-racehorses - one turns 5yrs 30th April and the other turns 3yrs 7th April.

Had the 5yr for 3 yrs. At 3.5yrs all he was capable of doing was hacking about the country lanes. It's only this years that he looks and feels ready to start a proper schooling "career".

3yr old I've had since November last year. She is by far a long way ahead of the other at this age regarding maturity. If i took her in the school and educated her, she'd take it all in now. Have hacked about (i'm lucky she's already broken to ride obviously) a couple of times and she's been fab, other than the steering is a bit hit and miss!

Just have fun for the first 12mths - they are only babies after all :)

My gelding was an August 2010 foal. He's not 11hh yet but since his father is a sec A and his Mum is only 35ins that's no surprise :) He's going to do some in hand showing this summer. This is him on his 2nd birthday last summer :)

My two 3yo.. The front one is just 3 last month.. The back one is 3.5 and a bit lanky and ribby for my liking at the moment, but he's shooting up again right now.. Gotta love the fugly stages..

Both are doing nothing much.. Basic handling is fine.. Walking out in hand is fine.. Other than that, there's no rush, they've a few years of growing up and out yet to go..

My wee Rhodri is 3 on april 7th, my plan is just to go slow, we've spent the last few weeks walking with a bridle, which, I never knew or thought for one minute would be any different than walking in a headcollar - seems it is. Then once we've got that bit susses we'll start long lining walking my hacking routes in hand and we'll get up when we are both good and ready :p

At 3 years old they still have a good 4 years of slow growing left to do. A lot of that is filling out but a bit is growing upwards too.

OP I wouldn't be surprised if yours made at least 15hh.

My experience is that they tend to mature a lot between 3 and 4, some earlier than later but a lot depends on getting a good fill of spring grass and then gradually building condition with work.

Although I backed my big lad at 3.5, he didn't really start any propper work til about a year later and we're still building him up a year after that. It's a slow process! (For some)

Just listen to your gut and enjoy the ride :)

Patience is a virtue :) Welshies are quite slow to mature, our boy who is 7 this year has only really now started to fill out & look more Welsh like (i used to call him the black yak lol), he has also grown an inch over the winter, which i was surprised at. They do say some Welshies dont fully mature till they are 8.

I did also used to own a WB x cob mare, she was 14.2 as a 3yr old & eventually ended up at 15.3!!

Mine is 3 in June. She has a way to go in physical maturity(I hope the front end catches up one day!) but she so needs mental stimulation. I have sat on. I have been carried a few yards and we have done a little stop-go and left and right.Following this she has been turned away for the winter and I will do a little more with her this year. Our current aim is to progress from simple clicker training to musical pitch aware training. She is showing some promise, but due to doing very little over the winter she is quite 'Kevin' at the moment.

Only people with KnabstrupperXAppy are allowed to say I am doing too much with this youngster! ;):)

My boy is 3 in may. I did a little bit of long reigning, lunging and in hand hacking last summer whilst I was pregnant. I didn't want him doing nothing until now. Il start to back him in the autum probably then turn him away for the winter. He's so friendly and sweet, I popped some tack on him to see his reaction and he didn't bat an eyelid, fingers crossed he's going to be easy.

Not sure why the uploads not worked! He's 14.3hh now, no idea on who his parents are. I think he'l make about 15.1hh.

Of course as X racehorses they would have been worked from yearlings at various stages - and to give them some time off when they retire from that game, is a good idea. Then you have the added advantage of picking up something that has been broken, usually very traffic proof, and socialised with other horses - possibly even schooled over fences - win, win. A great advert for heading off to Ascot horse sales and buying up these wonderful animals (at bargain basement prices) to do another job.

This is my rising 3 year old Irish Sports Horse, Jester. I worry myself stupid about his condition as he is a little lean and seems to be going through a "gangly" stage at present :o

He was backed at just before his 2nd birthday by a dealer :mad: So not sure what to do with him this year, I may re-back him at the end of summer and then turn him away to grow up a bit. He is approx. 15.3/16hh now no idea how big he is going to get..??

There is just something so sweet about you're boy, he's really lovely :D

Mines not being backed at all this year, partly as Im too heavy and partly because shes not ready. Shes. Been sat on three times, wears tack, goes on walks on her own and will continue to do the same over the summer. Hoping to get her to a couple of shows too. My 4yo is slowly being backed, will go out hacking and hopefully to a few shows.

Well Nell is rising 4, though her passport says she is already 4, I do not believe a word! She is more like 3.5yrs now, going by her teeth and vets etc
We have just started hacking in the last few weeks at the weekend, only walking, I had done lots of groundwork and walking out in hand and now I am on board :D

I plan to just do some gentle hacking this year, building both our confidence as we go, but we will only be doing walking for a while yet, I am in no rush, a gentle plod is fantastic just now and all I expect.
TBH, I am unlikely to ever ask a great deal as I am pretty much a happy hacker, small chance of some local in hand showing this year, and maybe one day something endurance related but would not be doing that for a couple of years I reckon if at all. But for now I am over the moon to be walking out quietly, I want a nice easy and chilled life for her, she is my big fluffy pet really :D

This is the lovely lilly, 3 in August. We will be having tack on this year and long reining as she is not really mature enough for anything else.

Mine is turning 3 in May. Just taking it slow for now, pop the saddle on now and again to get him used to it and last weekend I started half jumping on his back (he's used to me doing weird stuff, so that helps!).

I lunge him a few times a week to build the muscle and I walk him outside. He is going really soft and nice on the lunge (with pessoa).

SummerampMagsmarch13010_zps7aa9e54c.jpg

This is Summer she is rising 3 born 1st June 2010. I hope for her to do some inhand showing early summer and if she seems ready and weather is nice light backing in the Autumn.
There have been some lovely youngsters on this post exciting times ahead for us all. Sorry picture is so large when ever I try and resize them they end up tiny.

Mines 3 very late in the year - so been taking thigs obviously slower.

however i had started to lunge her as shes almost 2.5...in walk only but transfering that to long reining... (so have lunged 4/5 times and we are now long reining in walk)! :)

i ""work"" her 2/3 times a week (5 -10 mins max)!.. in walk long reining

shes had tack on /bitted (shes incredibly strong)!, roller, bags - jumped up and down next too....slightly leaned over but not weight... so thats end of summer job

plan is to carry on bombproofing her, walking her out "hacking" a few times a week, generally mess with her as she was feral - and also get out to a showing show - by end of summer (aug/sept) id like to sit on her do a little walk and thats it - the break her properly in march 14 :)
