My big WB mare has offset knees and because of the way she's shod infront the clenches rise within days of her being shod and invariably the shoe starts to shift slightly. I was wondering if anyone else ever used a clincher themselves between shoeings? My farrier accommodates as best he can but it would save us both a lot of aggro if I could simply secure the rising clenches early on myself. I guess I'll mention it to my farrier at his next visit but meanwhile just wondered if my suggestion will be a viable one or whether he'll laugh me out of the door!!! :)

Don't know about fixing clenches yourself but my farrier has said rising clenches everywhere. To do with the dry weather and hooves drying out.

It sure is a pain in the neck! Unfortunately my mare is big and heavy and has a significant deviation, so the way she is shod to try to compensate means she's prone to her shoes shifting and the clenches rising. I guess the way she bears weight enourages this. She's lame after an injury a couple of weeks ago so hasn't even been worked since the last shoeing but her shoes are looking terrible already, particularly the outer clenches which always rise within days of her being newly shod.

Is she worked in a sand arena by any chance, that acts like sandpaper and the hoof itself wears away. The other problem is caused by hard ground and trotting on the roads, which tend to push the nails upwards.
I don't see any problem with doing the clenches yourself, ask farrier to show you how.
He might want to use thinner nails to make it easier for you, best to ask him if there are other options.
Would side clip shoes/new balance/ no shoes help?

I do! If my boy's clenches rise between shoeings I put them down with a hammer. Get your farrier to show you how though because if you do it wrongly you'll loosen the shoe :)

Thanks! I've just texted the farrier to ask him to come out 3 weeks early to reset her front shoes. I'll speak to him again when he comes as I'm sure he doesn't want to have to keep coming out to me at 2 week intervals any more than I want him to have to!!!

I often have this problem in the summer - and just get my farrier (or a farrier that's on the yard at the time) to push the clenches back down.
