Road Studs? Help or hindrance? Any tips?

I'm about to start taking my youngster out on the roads to improve his fitness. I put studs in for jumping on grass, should I use road studs for roadwork? I've never used them before so could do with some advice please...

They look huge and I'm worried he'll skate about in them?

Oh really? Are they good? Can you tell me at some point some good routes? I'm a bit nervy on the roads (had a few near-misses when younger, plus left a nice horse-shaped bum print on a bonnet once) so could do with some directi)onal pointers!!
 

Yea, Id defo recommend road nails, they are already in the shoe so you dont have to fanny around putting them in b4 you ride and my horses have never slipped on the road with nails in, even on that black shinny stuff!

Sure Ill show you some rides. If we're about at the same time over the weekend, we'll ride together if you like.

Dont use road studs, they cause unbalance on the foot. As suggested, nails are alot better

we use road nails, we call them wardax nails (not sure if sp correct!!)
i feel they help alot, give that extra little bit of grip needed when on the roads, i use them on my 4yo!
 
Yes, my two have road nails and would recommend them as we have some pretty steep roads around here and they don't slip nearly as much as they did without them

My farrier doesnt charge any extra for them!
But I think they are usually around 75p each and I only have them in the back, 2 in each.
 
I drive my horse but I have pins in the outside heel of my horses shoes they are about a 1/8th of an inch in diameter and stick down about an 1/8th of an inch below the shoe, they are made from tungston carbide, one set of pins will last atleast 6 months and cost 50p each, I origanially used them on a youngster, who would wear out the outside of her hind shoes in less than 3 weeks, these pins make shoes last a lot longer than usual as well, my farrier has just refitted the same set for the third time.
 
Before I had road studs put into Charlie's shoes, we slipped down a hill, this then caused him to panic. Since that experience we have always used road nails. Now if he slips he doesnt panic has he has much more grip. Where we hack out you have to go up and down some very steep hills, not always tarmaced to being hoof friendly
 
I have road nails put in and they really help as we have all roads round here with steep hills and they stop the slipping on greasy tarmac.
 
I would stay away from road studs!!!I have used the road nails,they are great but if you do alot of roadwrk they wear down very quickly!!My farrier used to drill a tiny hole in the outside of each hind shoe and hammer a different piece of metal in!I cannot for the life of me remember what they are called but they stay in the shoe and do not wear down at all!I do alot of roadwork and these never let him slip,however after a couple of wks with road nails they have worn sufficiently for him to slip a little!!The farrier just redrills holes in new shoes and hammers a new 1 in,they only cost a £1 each!!I am sure somebody on here has probably had them b4??Will try get the name for you!x

Thats exactly what I was trying to describe in my post above as thats what I have in my horses shoes, my farrier calls them pins, they are made from tungston carbide, he gets them from a farm suppliers, they stop my horse sliding down the roads with the carriages. I will take a photo and put it up.
