Right - now i don't want to sound stupid but..........I am aiming to do some unaffil eventing this season. I want to aim for the two day at stockland lovell. With the roads and tracks - what does that actually intail?? I assume it it over a set course on roads and tracks and you have to do it in a optimum time? I just want to make sure that i get her fitness right! Also how long is the steeple chase course, does anyone know?
Thanks!

The SLM one is not very long and the times are easy going. The steeplechase is 2 circuits and again not very long. I do not think I worked much harder than I normally do to get my horse fit but then again compared to some poor overweight horses I saw eventing this year I have mine pretty fit. On whole phase A was about 15-20mins (walk/trot), Phase B was about 3mins (gallop) Phase C was about 30-40mins (small bit of walk but mainly trot/canter) and crosscountry was about 5 mins. (If doing above 3'0 it was Intro/PN time)

Yep I agree with LEC, with regard to the times and distances etc.

I've been two years now and found I was absolutely shattered before the start of the xc course and I was fairly fit. However, the year just gone I didn't feel tired at all with my normal eventing routine. Having said that I was just about the only one with time faults on the roads and tracks - oops, watch stopped working !

The steeple chase was 1 and a quarter times around the dressage field, which was over 5 chase fences.

If you are not used to it trotting and cantering for 30 to 40 mins is tiring, especially before a decent cross country course.

The biggest problem I found was that the ground always seem to be very hard and I'm not happy working hard for this long. They do put a lot of work in on the ground but when it's dry, its dry.

I also read there is going to be a 2 day at Pontispool this year.

It's a great experience though & I wouldn't have missed it for anything. Have fun!

Hi

Thanks for all the info.

I know what you mean about the ground - it does get very hard down there.

I am looking forward to having something to aim for!

Will start the training then!! I should get down there a couple of times before that on RC camp so that will help.

Excited!

I've done the Milton Keynes 3 day event and the RC Horse Trials Champs a few times.

The MK 3DE was the first one, so I used Mary Thomsons' Eventing Yearbook, and followed her fitness schedule as far as I could bearing in mind having no school or decent hacking!

Rosie did really well, was fit as a fiddle through all phases and won a prize for the Best condition/fittest horse in her class so it must have worked!!

Oh great - i may have to look into getting that book. It's hard to know where to start isn't it? I think i need to get myself fitter too - amazing hopw out of breath you are after one round of xc!!! Let alone the other phases!
