Just asking really as i have a very good friend who has ridden to adv Dressage, she lost her good horse & unfortunatley has never found another horse until now. Horse is a big WB who's rising 5yo i dont know more apart from he's been out & about to shows, hacks perfectly & apparently is an absolute gent.

So this horse is perfect in every aspect however he Roars lightly, basically he has idiopathic hemiplegia on one side cant remember which. Apparently everyone is confident that it wont cause a problem in dressage. But like She & i know once you get a horse to a good level in Dressage it really could affect the horse & not in a good way. Obviously there is a tie back op but she's been through hell & back the last few years & im not sure she should put herself through more imo.

Im not sure about this horse, would you entertain a horse that Roars lightly for Dressage??
Also what sort of price would you be prepared to pay for such a horse, sorry i cant give more details??

OH has a horse with the same problem, it wasn't considered necessary to do a tie back, as his breathing and cardiovascular system wasn't affected.

Something that we have noticed when he does dressage is that he often gets comments that the horse is tense, as he doesn't appear to be we do wonder if the judges are influenced by the noise that he makes. He gets better marks when the judges car window is shut:)

Kia grunts alot due to a flap of skin in his throat but the vet doesnt consider it severe enough as he only does it when asked to collect and hold himself (something to do the with angle of his head affecting it) and it goes away the more work you do with him.

If he is perfect in everyother way and the vet has no concerns i wouldnt see a problem with purchasing him :)

Mine roars ever so slightly - bought it knowing there was a chance and got it scoped at the vetting. No need for a tie back op though as it's so mild and I was told he could 3-day event on it if I'd wanted to (I don't! ;) ) . To be honest now he's working properly it's hardly noticeable any more. It certainly wouldn't put me off, and it certainly doesn't effect his level of relaxation/performance in anyway. If the horse is perfect in every other way and the vet clears it for the work you want it for, the way I look at it is that there are so many more things that can/do go wrong with them that I wouldn't let it put me off.

laryngeal haemiplegia the most common cause of roaring is progressive so usually gets worse. So it would put me of purchasing however would not necessarily prevent as long as it was reflected in the price.

I would not purchase if money was tight and I could not afford to rectify if it did get to the stage where hobday and tieback was required ( currently about 3k ) although on the plus side this operation is very common and usually highly successful.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far very interesting.

Lannerch, that was my understanding & with the horse being young there is a lot of time there for it to get worse. Operation could be done but she went through so much with her last horses im not sure she would want/cope well with a newish horse on Box rest for 6 weeks. The horse in question is not mega bucks.
However she still has to get her vets opinion & a vetting which she has been told it will probably fail due to the wind problem, so far all that she has is the owners Vets opinion.

So come on guys how much would you realistically pay for a horse like the one ive described??

pricing wise as the operation which the horse may or may not need, which may or may not be sucessful ( although it usually is but any op is a risk ) I would expect to pay at least 2k maybe more of the price it would be worth if it made no noise.

Remember if it at any point does need the op, as it has the condition already insurance will not cover it so that will immediately add around 3k on to what you have to spend, (plus the 8 weeks box rest). ( My horse had to have hobday and tieback when it developed a noise when he was nearly 5 which did get worse hence the op )
