What breed of horse was Russell Crowe's and Cate Blanchett's horses?? Were they Andalusians (they tend to be in those films)?? Was a bit blind in the cinema as my contact lenses fell out!!!

I havent' seen it, but I would imagine Andalusians, there was a thread about it last week, because it was filmed in Wales (I think) alot of local people were recruited as extras

...how jealous am I!!

The blacks tend to be Fresians. I was at the jousting at Hampton Court Palace last year, the rumour going round was that the black that was there was also going to be used in the Robin Hood film but I have no idea if that is true!

Ah! Thanks... right, the black ones could well have been Friesians (as said, was kinda blind), and I think the white one may have been an Andalusian. Gorgeous horses!!! Pretty much the whole film was horses, horses, horses... who cares about Russell Crowe's accent, the predictability of it all and the not too great dialogue... when there were horses 90% of the time :).

andalutions !!!
my friend helped make the film !! and yes it was done in wales but there was also somewhere else cant remember where he said

I was watching the film yesterday, intently studying the breeds! xD
I'm thinking that his horse was an Andalusian. Hers was lighter, so I'm guessing a Lusitano.. but most of them were Andalusians, Friesians, and what looked like Friesian/Thoroughbred crosses.... if I got any of these right, I'll be so proud of myself!! :D

I was watching it too, very nice horse.

Makes me smile that all these british farming folk have such well bred horses. I am sure in reality they were probably riding large native ponies or such like.

Well, I did wonder if that white horse was a Highland pony. But it was probably rose tinted spectacles and wishful thinking!

I don't think that film had much historical accuracy! A horse ridden by a nobleman was a very expensive item, and highly valued and probably cared for better than any servants around.

The sets were impressive though, I liked the ship being sailed up the river to London.

I think it was Robin Hood I watched some filming of in Farnham. There were talks to re-use the castle in Harry Potter. But believe it wasn't, but the area was also used for some filming?

When I saw it there were lots of 'dead people' littering the ground quite comical up close.

My black cob was 'alledgedly' a horse extra during the filming in Wales, which was around Pembrokeshire I believe, but have never managed to spot him in it!!!!

The previous Robin Hood, I think with Kevin Costner had horses provided by David Goodey of Foxhill Stables, Reading, which used to be the largest film yard in the country. I know 'cos my old gelding now 34 came from there. I bought him for Ride and Drive and he has starred in many films.

Today the Steve Dent is often seen as Horse Master on the credits - you could Google and ask him.

Friesan Driving horses, frequently supplied by Hayden Webb for period films. Here is his web site.

Of course to be truly accurate all these period films should include Britain's oldest breed of horse, The Cleveland Bay which dates back to the Roman Occupation of Britain.

Russell Crowe apparently wrote about the horses used in the film on his unofficial fan website, and said that they used four Andalusians to play the part of his horse. His favourite was called Rusty, and by the way Russell wrote about him it seems he was quite a fan.

I think most of the main part horses are supplied by the Devil's horsemen. Their not far from us and managed to go to their Christmas panto . Kids loved it.
My daughter was lucky enough to spend time with Gerard Nuprous on set of Les Miserable recently. He is one of life's larger than life characters and a real horseman!
