Hi, me and a friend were looking at paying the Basingstoke Robinsons Megastore a visit....however, we live up near Banbury so it would be quite a trek and basically want to know if its worth it! Do they have masses of stock? We would be looking mostly for boots (for humans not horse!) but also can't resist a bargain! Are there any other tack shops down that way that are worth a visit?
Thank you for any feedback! The other option would be Milton Keynes.....

Ta muchly :-)

When you say Milton Keynes I assume you are thinking of Horseatack and RB equestrian, as we don't have a Robinsons (I wish!). Horseatack has a more limited range (although still fine) and tends to be bit cheaper and RB has more range but bit pricier. No idea about Robinsons though, sorry!

Thanks Lara, yes I meant those two in MK but couldn't remember what they were called! Have been to both before but not for a while! Was hoping that Robinsons would have had a bit more choice!

Dont bother with Robinsons! I go to the Cannock one every now and again, the staff are lovely but the stock and range isnt great and certainly not worth a long drive

Horseatack is getting better with its ranges but is a little similar - it is a nice well set out store though, basics are cheap and again staff are very helpful

I love RB Equestrian, its a little more upmarket and a lovely store to browse around - you get free coffee which is a plus if you have had a long journey! The ranges stocked are good, the choice is pretty good for most things especially bits, supplements and clothing. The saddlery choices are not fantastic for budget buys but the stuff they do have is good quality.

You could do the two MK ones in a day, they are not very far apart

If you are looking for secondhand saddles or rugs then a trip down the M40 will take you to Catslips tack shop (AKA tumble down mansion) not far from the M25, this is a truely unique and most amazing place - not to everyones taste but if the idea of trawling through a room with an 8ft high pile of rugs, piles of girths, numnahs, boots, hats etc etc etc is your idea of fun you can pick up some bargains and the number of secondhand saddles they have is mind boggling, the lady that runs is is a character, very patient and very knowledgable, ask her any question and she will vanish to some far flung room in the house and reappear with what you want - often excellent quality - often very cheap - its a bit like a very bizzare Argos in that you wait at the front desk and new stuff is fetched for you to look at lol. Be prepared to get absolutely filthy, love it or hate it you wont have ever been anywhere like it! (have a Google to prepare yourself if you decide to go)

The most comprehensively stocked tack shop I have ever made a day trip to was Ingatestone Saddlery in Essex, I spent hours in there and absolutely loved it, its a common sense choice, has a cafe, nice big parking area and sells just about anything you can imagine - a bit like what you would expect Robinsons to be like!

Loving the sound of Catslip tack shop, it sounds amazing,{pity its to far away from me as I would be never away from it}

I live relatively near to Ingatestone, its brilliant! Would recommend it for sure. Never go there for just one or two things though....or with money in your pocket... ;)

Wow thank you for all that info! Perhaps we should stick to MK then as it's closer too. That Catlips place sounds amazing! Will have to remember it for another time, bit far to do all in one day! Unfortunately Essex definitely is too far to go :-( tho if i'm ever down that way will have to try and get there!

I have just remembered Tower Farm saddlers near Rugby - this is a nice store and has lots of choice. The feed and bedding is the cheapest for miles around and they have a bargain rug section, lots of choice of bits and saddlery and have an amazing sale twice a year. You could drive cross country from Banbury then shoot straight down the A5 to the MK stores :)

Also I didnt say that Catslips sells new items its not all secondhand just in case anyone reading is tempted to go there

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! We went just before christmas I think it was, was very dissapointed as apparently it is their biggest store ever (was no bigger than a tesco local lol) . . . . If you are looking for a decent tack shop, try frogpool manor which is in kent or Ingatestone which is in Essex - Can highly recommend Ingatestone Saddlery. Hope that helps. x
