quietly musing........................99% sure the ulcers are under control, he's going down to 1 sachet of omeprazole as of wed, but is showing basically none of his *old symptoms* now, ie no rearing, or grunting/kicking at leg etc and is generally much more on side.

he's on a very high oil (corn oil) diet as we think he might have mild EPSM, and he's certainly been a lot softer in his muscles since being on this.

all that said i dont think he's every going to be a super hot type of horse, and im wondering if i can tweak his feed to give him a bit more instant energy, whilst keeping it ulcer/epsm friendly......i really do prefer a horse that takes a bit of a pull and comes out bouncing off the walls, rather than taking so long to get motoring! i know i cant/wont change his personality, but would just like him a touch more on his toes.

have heard topspec turbo works well but is it likely to upset either his tummy or muscles, and if so, what can i use instead?

he's on the reccomended amount of winergy condition, plus micronised linseed, high protein grass nuts, and oil. haylage is mix of ryegrass and alfalfa.

I would give the nutritionist a call from the feed helplines...you can always sanity check it with your vet and on here..,

I wouldn't try TopSpec Turbo iiwy. Packed full of starch and it made my horse's feet fall apart from the inside.

I'd try Re-Leve as its high energy and designed for epsm and ulcer cases?

Pretty sure my vets recommend Re-leve in their literature on ulcer prone horses too. Just can't put my hands on it at the moment to check, but thats the name that spung to mind.

totally understand you reccomending re leve, but the DE value is barely any higher than what he gets now (12.9 versus 12.4) where as the turbo is 16 so a big jump........i need instant fizz and whizz!

concerned re the feet thing though as mine are BF.

hmmmm, more to consider.

The thing is its starch that will give instant energy and "fizz" which you don't want. Don't go just on DE as it depends what ingredients work for your horse. Any oil based supplements wont give fizz....

How about good old red-cell or propell plus? Either are usually good as rocket fuel!

The other thing which possibly sounds a bit off the wall, but how about doing some interval training with him in the arena? I'm not suggesting he's not fit, but doing some intervals every 4 days will really fitten him up and therefore should sharpen him up (look at how reactive some eventers are in the dressage ;))

My (barefoot) 'EPSM' symptom TB is doing well on the high oil, keep it warm regime but has definitely put on weight and has more energy on D&H ERS pellets. These haven't made her footy or grumpy. She too is very behind the leg but aggressive in the stable too if uncomfortable in her stomach so these could be worth atry. We do low level eventing and she is full of beans

Different kind of answer but has always worked with my ex-racers why not give him a bit of a different scene for a while.
Hacking, trips to the gallops, basically a break from schooling.

My exracer has had ulcers in the past and is intolerant to pretty much any form of nut or mix. She just has alfa oil and linseed oil and I add propell plus if shes lacking sparkle. Shes a very hot horse so I have to be careful what I feed but I find it gives her that boost without sending her loopy!

Minor issue of instant death ;)

He does polework and goes for canters in the fields once or twice a week, schedule dependent, but can't be trusted on roads or hacks.

Powerstance (29.4Mj/kg) from the same folk who make Coolstance?

My TB is also barefoot and I'm one of those folk mentioned in the other feed thread with a molasses phobia additionally he is sensitive to alfalfa.

Most of the feeds that the vet recommended to me all contain ulcer & barefoot "no-no" ingredients (IMO). Those suggested were Re-Leve, Outshine, D&H Build & Glow, Baileys no.6 endurance mix and Red Mills Care Cubes. Out of them all I'd favour Re-Leve over the rest.

Also the level of oil he'd require, according to the vet, wouldn't be palatable and then you need to balance it all to take care of all those free radicals...

Apparently coconut oil is the way to go as it's the only safe saturated fat to feed to horses. I'm pretty sure you can buy it straight but in the form of Copra seems the easiest.

I'd go for the Re-Leve and add to that a bag of Luminence (sp), it comes highly recommended Carl Hester uses it and the horses that I have seen on it showed a marked difference in performance - both TBs and Sporthorses. Wouldn't touch anything D&H with a bargepole. Winergy is amazing feed too but so expensive. We feed Saracen here and they are very helpful.

We use Nupafeed's staypower - rocket fuel in a bottle and the beauty of it is that you can add it in or leave it out as required!

It's not cheap but you can be a bit economical with feeding it and probably won't need it all the time. We use is in the run up to a competition and then on a show day for bubble and fizz!

I tried my horse on ERS pellets last winter(as part of an ulcer friendly diet) but they started to hot him up. There are low starch & thought he'd be ok with them, but he's very feed sensitive & the most unlikely things heat him up!

Also tried copra on mine & that was like rocket fuel to him! Was out of work at the time & made him difficult to handle on the ground, just glad he wasn't in ridden work whilst on it!

Might be worth asking Saracen if you can use equi-jewel with Re-leve.
It's technically a balancer, but we used it on my mare to maintain her energy and keep condition on when she was doing 3 day shows and it was very effective. Made her feel good and kept her sparkle without making her silly.

I swapped my rather idle barefoot TB - who has shown signs of both ESPM and ulcers and has had a short course of Omazeprole - from Winergy Condition to Re-Leve a couple of weeks ago. The Winergy piled weight on him but he just didn't have any real 'forward', on the Re-leve however I'm finding him with a bit more 'spark' and easier to go forward - sometimes even a little too forward - but settled and rideable. He's nowhere near as advanced as CS, or as fit, but I'd certainly recommend it. I feed it with rice bran (Omega Rice or Equi-jewel), unmollassed chaff and his vits which does include a half measure of a vitamin E, selenium and lysine supplement to help his muscles.

I did find with the Re-leve that I don't need to feed much. Recommended amount for TB in work and fulfilling vitamin requirement is 2kg, worked up to that amount with him and he was bouncing about, feed 1.5kg now and could prob feed even less. Have noticed no footiness either, even though it does contain a tiny amount of molasses. He's really building muscle too, something we struggled with up until now.

Very pleased with the results on it.

Equi-jewel and Re-leve are designed to be fed together. Equi-jewel isn't really a balancer - it doesn't contain all the vitamins and minerals like a balancer would - it's a rice bran and linseed oil feed with the required vits to aid condition and muscle gain/health...

The other one is Falcon Feeds Omega Rice which is a bit cheaper but just as good :)

Re-Leve definitely worth a try and you could top up with stamm 30 if you thought it necessary. I know you are saying not a huge jump on DE values but I have always found it to have plenty of oomph

If you google powerstance it should come up with a suppliers list, I got some from Leicester way (cool stance) and loved it, also loved re-lieve but second the you really don't need as much as the bag says you do!!!
