Took the boys down to see the ponies yesterday afternoon, wanted to practise my plaiting, met with Rockets owner who was out on a walk with her daughter riding Patch and she was leading Rocket, she said she had noticed he looks a bit sore at the moment and I have to agree, he really wasn't happy, he doesn't look terribly laminitic and no pulses but he definitely didn't feel comfortable.
he isn't overweight, in fact the opposite, she has him on the tiniest bare paddock, he is getting laminaze with his little bit of hay overnight and im going to dig out the alphabute to give him.
He is booked in for a trim this Wednesday and I am hoping it will help a little, no reason for this post other than disappointment, we are due to go to our next show in a couple of weeks and really want him to be sound for that, the Jack / Rocket combo had been doing brilliantly.
I'm pretty sure he would test positive for cushings or EMS but don't feel that she wants him on meds for the rest of his life, anything else we could do?
homemade salmon fishcakes on offer,

If it is Cushings, the medication seems to work almost miraculously in some ponies. Could you offer to contribute to the cost? Otherwise I know someone with a Cushings/laminitis pony who doesn't improve on medication but who gets relief by wearing magnet boots. I should add that she is very careful with the management and he is only ever a bit 'footy' at worst.
I know it's hard for children but it is a good lesson to learn that we have to swallow our disappointment sometimes in the animal's best interest.

I will look into the magnet boots, thank you.

The boys totally understand that he might not be sound for the show, they have his best interests at heart too.

Think I'm more disappointed to be honest, but only because I worked so hard over the winter to get him sound, X-rays, a great relationship with my farrier who trimmed according to his x-rays and was as excited as I was to see the improvement, thought we had turned a corner with him.

his owner is always really careful with his management and he is never allowed to get overweight or fed the wrong things :(
