Rode a friends horse today (not for the first time) and he is outrageously strong. He is in a french link snaffle and i spent the whole 2 hrs (fun ride) yanking on his mouth. i felt so guilty, I tried to slow him with my seat, forget it. He stuck his head in the air and he WENT. Now I am no shrinking violet, and I "asked" him to slow. He was having none of it. He is always like this. His owner hunts him and admits he pulls her arms out. She is only young, 20, and her mother won't let her change his bit (she is into parelli in a big way but does not ride)! For goodness sake, surely it is better to put something in his mouth that he respects than pull like murder? Your opinions please.....

Yeah....tell her mother about it and im sure you cn come to an agreement....are you sure he isnt putting his tounge over the bit?or opens his mouth? if he does then put a flash on him....if he wotn stop, put one hand on the mane and pul the other give and take....im sure she'l understand if you tell her that the horse needs brakes or he'l be spoilt.!...

good luck!

hope i cud help

20's not that young. Surely its up to the regular rider of the horse to choose a suitable bit. They need to get some backbone and tell their mother where to stick their carrot sticks. I just wouldn't ride it for them again if I were you and tell them exactly why.

I don't think you can blame the poor horse for your lack of muscle tone.
Perhaps you need to address this weakness in yourself - does your village have a Tug'o'War team you could join? Or perhaps rock climbing might help you gain upper arm strength? Perhaps rowing?
As a last resort you could go to the gym and lift weights, gradually increasing til you are able to ride a downwards transition without your foot on his neck, and a backwards brace position?
Just trying to help.

still, i think the horse should be sorterd...in my opinion you should be able to handle a horse even if you have sparrow knee caps of muscle!!....you shouldnt be fighting with a horse, or there is something definatly wrong....i think your just covering up the problem and asking for a fight if you just train to be 'half' as strong as the horse will be and potentially encourgaing and hardening the horses mouth further...sorry only my opinion.

Aah. Another one that falls vicim to "parelli"...
I bet if the mother had her way the beast would be in one of those rope halters to be ridden in.
IMO if the horse needs a stronger bit, put a stronger bit in it. It could be really dangerous otherwise!
Why doesn't the mother get on said beast, see what she thinks then!

If the mother was really into parelli she would be riding it in a rope halter. There were some horses on a pleasure ride and they both had rope halters and were completely under control.

Why not suggest a rubber pelham, kinder than snaffles, and the curb chain doesn't have to be tight. Can be a very successful bit.
