First ride of this winter in the dark, almost foggy as well, had the viz on and his headlight and my flashing neon top, spoke to some group of kids at a street lit park near me who were reasonably sensible, they all gave him a stroke and asked sensible questions, so I was happy to chat to them, so hopefully not all riders will be classed as stuck up toffs, quite made me smile when one said "what big eyes he has" made me think of red riding hood

, they wanted to see him canter and asked how I got him to do it, I explained about legs and sqweezing, not kicking and hitting ect, made a change from the gang fights with weapons we have had on that area, so not a bad end to the day.

I don't actually mind riding in the dark and have every flashing light/gadget on the market. As i am now on a yard with a school i don't have to as much but do still venture out now and again.

I always stop and talk to kids/teenagers if they are not being stupid as i think that maybe just maybe 5 minutes of my time explaining how horses are might just sink in with one or two of them.

You could always just squeeze your legs and go cantering off if the going got too scary!

(some of) Us teenagers are lovely really, I hate being glared at for being a dirty no good teenager, especially when I am in my riding stuff...ok I AM dirty, but in a good healthy way, doing a good healthy hobby, caring for a dependent animal and working my socks off to fund my expensive hobby! *grumble grumble grumble*

Riding in the dark is far too dangerous for my liking

No way would I risk myself, my horses, or others, like that

I'm so glad that you have discovered some non-a******es though!

Exactly why I would encourage every rider to stop for children and teenagers who want to talk to you & your horse. if it gets them interested and puts us riders in a positive light in their minds, they are far less likely to go about boy racing past you, or letting them out for "fun" etc.

Thats my theory anyway!
