so, farmed my horse out to a yard in Jan because my field was so wet. Ive waited and waited and finally it seemed to have dried out. I had an agri contractor look at it on Friday and the man walked over it with me and said yes it was still soft but another couple of weeks or so and they would come and give it a try. Perfect I thought, so I put my notice in at the yard - its great there but I really need, financially and time wise, to get my horse home! I was away from home this weekend but got a call from OH on Sat morning and this picture texted to me Ive not spoken to them yet....

From the rushes in the background it looks as though it is a naturally wet field - didn't the contractor notice that. I had a field like that before it was drained and I lost one hay crop because it was so soft once it was mown no more tractors could get on it to haybob and bale - I invested a few £hundred in some land drains and it is much better now. Can you electric fence enough to let the horses have the undamaged part?

I have absolutely no idea what I am going to do... or how they are going to get that out of there. Tbh there are bits that look even worse than that, it looks ploughed

So long as it isn't wet enough for the horses to go in above their coronary band, they will level it off to a degree with their feet, as it gets drier and drier. Add some paddock seed and they'll tread that in for you too!!

Wow - not great. Can you un give notice at your yard? or are there enough dry bits for the horses to be temporary fenced off into the dry bits for a while?

Horses have a greated weight per surface area that the machinery so good job you didn't get them home before finding out how wet it was underneath. The farmers round here have been finding the same when trying the drill - an inch of firm crust then thick soup underneath!

I'm sure you've spotted it needs to dry a lot more, then be rolled again then probably some over seeding, it will recover (grass is amazing) but not for a while longer yet.
