Hi

I'm currently horse-hunting for a safe, sane cob to hack out and I've come across a nice sounding five year old bay mare. She's a Romanian cob, imported last year by a dealer and bought by her current owner almost immediately, used as a happy hacker since. She's apparently grown too big (especially width-wise) for her owner who has a bad back and is finding her painful to canter.

I've never come across a Romanian cob before, and can't find much on the Internet. Has anyone ever come across one, known one?

Laura

Hmmmm the only Romanian Cob I have ever come across, was exactly as you describe and it was about 3 1/2 years ago. When I say exactly, I mean the whole accompanying story too!! Turns out the mare was 4, had been in the country for about 6 weeks and was being sold by a 'friend' of the dealer that imported her!! Needless to say, upon discovering all of this, we did not pursue the vetting and possible purchase.

HA - funny you should ask that F, as I was thinking the same, as my story above was concerning a dealer in Devon.....

_SN_, that's a bit worrying! Was she 15.1 and in Devon?

We posted at the same time! Yes and yes! VERY pretty face (quite dished, like she had Arab in her lines) and an enormously bushy mane. Incredibly stocky, but due to pretty face didn't seem coarse. A very bright, blood bay, with no white - at least I don't remember any white.

If she's a dealer pretending to be a private seller that doesn't sound too promising. It's quite a way from me, that's why I was asking.

I went quite a long way to see an Irish cob last weekend at a riding school / dealers that I'd been talking to for three weeks, when I got there he was a right state: skinny, terrible coat (covered in bites and scratches, I gather it was living out with 30 other horses and it looked like they'd all had a go), terrible feet with ridges, long toes, no heels and the back shoes hanging off, girth-sore, and napping towards the gate of the school (though since it sounds like he's working in there every day you can't blame him for that!) - So the point is I'm learning to a bit more wary...

She also said that she keeps it on a farm, who also does groundworks contracting so has a lot of equipment about, she has to ride on a pretty busy road, and the only thing the mare can be a little spooky about is a very loud local dog. Does any of this also ring a bell?

Thanks

hmm yes the dealer in devon that imports 'romanian cobs' is notably dodgy. Was it a grey or a bay that you were looking at?

Hiya.

I couldn't resist to reply to your post, although my circumstances are slightly different. I own a Romanian Cob, and she's been with me for about 2 years.

The yard I bought her from had her for two years and had basically put her to pasture upon buying her. The previous owners told me they had bought her from a 'Dealer' who had imported her from Romania.

I think my girl had been worked hard in the past. She has quite a few scars and marks on her back legs, and a particularly large scar on her rump.

My cob is not a competition or a jumping pony, but a perfect family type. I know all horses are different, but my point is that if Romanian Cobs are like my girl you would be safe as houses!

If anybody out there has any information about Romanian Cobs I would be really grateful. I have looked on the internet too and can't find anything either about them!

Thanks, S

Hi,
i just got a romanian cob about 4 months ago, and shes the best, most genuine, friendly girl ever. i got her from someone who had previously about 3 months before hand gotten ehr from a dealer in devon, i don't know if its the same person, but they are the best horses, when i first got Ginnie, she was a little underweight, but gained it quickly, there is nothign wrong with her, the only problem we had was the information on her passport was incorect, specificaly her age, apparently this was because she was braught into the UK intended for 'Human consumption'' as stated on her passport by a legal stamp. We could not figure out why such a lovely girl would be braught here for meat, but do not be put off by such things, she is lovely, and since getting Ginnie, the people be baught her bye have gotten atleast 3 or 4 more romanian cobs and sold them on within weeks, as far as i can tell, they have all have the great presonality and temperment as Ginnie.

i have found some information on tehm on teh internet, apparently they are msolty working horses that pulled carts on family farms, but have been replaced recently by machines that can do their jobs, and have been sold by their families to dealers in romania that send them to belgium, then to england for slaughter, and most are sold from dealers to dealer until sold either for slaughter or as pets, my mare has lots of scars, especialy on her back legs, specificaly two about half way up the outside of her back legs in teh same pace on both sides, supposedly from a cart..

hopefully i could help someone.
