We have two Romanian rescues. We got both (a year apart) when they were 6 months old and whilst they’d never been on the streets themselves , we soon learnt, they inherit their scepticism / trauma about the world from their mother, so they are reactive - which stems from fear, not aggression.
I should say my partner and I have spent a lot of time (and quite some money), learning how to manage them and help them feel more confident. But they’re still both reactive and not ‘normal’, bred for a job dogs, so they take a while to warm up to new people.
Our challenge is finding someone who can step in if we’re suddenly called away - and we’ve realised we can’t realistically take them on holiday with us… so if they could house + dog sit too , that’d be amazing (if you’re reading this and you’re considering getting a street dog, please take note - it’s not straightforward!).
So we’re looking for someone in Hampshire / West Sussex type area who could potentially be their 3rd person (our existing ‘3rd person’ has just joined the navy - how very inconvenient
). Someone - who’s preferably got a DBS - and understands from the get go that street dogs are definitely not labradors, and who could spend some time getting to know them, before they take sole charge. Obviously we’d pay them. They can’t bring their own dog unfortunately.
If you know someone / could recommend someone, we would LOVE to hear from you.
Nb. We have a fabulous behaviourist we talk to online, who could dog sit etc but she lives far away.
