So Roo hasnt been with other horses since LAST January, so a year and a half!
I moved to the current yard in March and it was around May that we turned her out NEAR the other horses, so they could see each other and get used to it. She spent a month or so, just over the fence from them so they could greet without getting hurt.
On Tuesday I put her in the field with them. It made me laugh that the herd were right at the top, near the gate, but they were so busy eating, that I managed to put Roo in, she walked straight past them to the bottom of the field and spent 10 minutes grazing before anyone noticed
There was a bit of a run around, and then mostly, things settled.
The 3yo that is the newest before her into the herd, kept chasing her, but only lasting 5 mins each time.
After the first night, Roo had swollen legs, was warm and had lost a shoe. She seemed so unhappy.
Since then, the youngster has stopped chasing her
And her shoe is back on and her legs no longer swollen
She stood by the gate for a couple of days. Last night, I saw her away from the gate for the first time
She stands there when she knows Im at the yard, and never strays far from it, but its an improvement.
She has made friends with one of the horses
And the one that chased her is now trying to get her to trust him, he follows her and she runs off but it looks like hes just trying to say hi now. So fingers crossed all is well
