Hi, I'm hoping to show my boy in hand in a Fabulous Feathers & Forelocks class in July but as I've never done anything like that before I haven't a clue what to wear, what to do, what to expect?! It's only a local show but I'd like to get it right (don't want to look like a numpty!).

Tips greatly appreciated. Need to start practising ASAP!

Thanks so much x

I love the title of that class! Without knowing what sort of horse you have (taking a bit of a guess from the class title) and assuming it is a nice local show where they encourage people to have a go I would do the following: -
What colour are your horses legs? Try to wear trousers in a contrasting colour, so white legs, dark trousers and vice versa. Team trousers with a shirt and tie. If you have it a tweed jacket or waistcoat if it is hot. I was always told to wear a hat, I only have a riding hat so I wear that. Gloves. I would wear short boots, choose footwear you can run in. That should be fine for a local level show. Have fun and good luck :)

Short joddy boots and cords do me usually.

Expect to walk around the outside - ideally stride at the same time with your horse.

Tips and tricks are several! -= Try not to go behind another horse that looks similar to yours - make yourself stand out!
Keep an eye on the Steward - they will be giving you directions and instructions.
Don't chat away in the lineup with horse grazing- its a sneaky moment the judge might be looking at you!

the 'individual' bit comes after the walk around - Bring your horse out infront of the judge and halt = expect to answer questions whilst making horse look totally stunning. then usually walk away from the judge - turn and trot back, past and onwards - then walk back into line.

ENJOY! smile and sounds like a nice fun show! Wish we had more here - all I can find is serious qualifiers or county level atm!

Post hijack, sorry! I have been wondering about showing my mare in hand as she did a lot of this with her old owner, but I have a really numpty question- she is bay with 4 whites (to knees and hocks). As I don't own harlequin trousers, should I wear dark or light?
