HELP
Snoopy, as you may know yesterday got tangled up in his lead rope after pulling away from me in the field.
Well he managed to (it looks) rope burn his foreleg.
It was HUGE this morning very hot, but hes not lame at all.
Its obviously tender! but hes fine to work on it.
Ive hosed it and hes been on the walker plus having turn out and its gone down a little but its very warm still.
is there anything i can put on it to cool it?
I have a problem in that he rips bandages off within 30 seconds

Would hosing twice a day be sufficient?

Flint did something similair and I hosed twice a day and when he was in on a night I just added so like ice clay to the tendon to help overnight as he was stood in- it went down in no time really

Tbh i think hosing would be plenty sufficient. If you think about how you'd treat a rope burn of your own.. i doubt you'd go to vast lengths with it.

While im sure its sore id actually be inclined not to put anything against it for that very reason. He'll be fine in a few days

Aloe vera gel is the best thing, you can find some in chemists that is actually a post sunburn cooling gel with aloe vera, and it is great for this kind of thing (has a local anaesthetic in it to take out the sting)

Good idea Tierra
He isnt keep on me touching it, i guess its pretty bruised too.
The burns themselves are tiny the size of a finger nail.
I will keep up with the hosing then

Just be careful with clay - don't think alot can be used on broken skin

My lad did similar in an argument with electric rope at my old yard - he ripped the front of his hock open and rope burned it all the way round.

Vet advised aloe vera on the the burned but not cut piece or the Aussie Dermobion replacement - tbh it went down in a couple of days then the scabs just flaked off fine although they are white(ish) now - he's black and it's grown back roany but you can only see thet close up

Aloe is AWESOME stuff. Best stuff for any burns or grazes etc. Really do highly recommend it

Sudocrem if you are worried about lack of hair=mudfever....

An added bonus with Aloe vera gel is that it encourages hair to regrow in it's normal colour rather than white

I agree with the Aloe Vera however, if you think it will scar a different colour, the Gel from Equine America in the red/white tube is fantastic.

I saw your post and was about to nag you about gloves until I read it...then figured you could hardly wear a glove on a horses leg LOL!!

There must be some cool gel or similar you can put on it, or would he eat it??

Thanks guys for all your answers.
He was cold hosed again this evening after work - he is totally sound, leg is just hot.
I have put on a cold arnica gel stuff with added witch hazel as i realised ive run out of aloe

Anyway, thank you again guys

Ooo interesting to read about cider vinegar - didnt know that.

Having had rope burns myself I know how much it hurts! Couldn't bear to put anything on it except run it under a cold tap frequently as anything else stung like mad!
