I wonder if anyone could help me, my horse was cross tied and picked up his back foot to scratch his face and got his foot stuck on his rope. He panicked and caused the rope to be wedged in between his foot and shoe.
I cut him free and he has no injuries. My YO helped cut the rope either side of where it's wedged as we couldn't pull it out.
I'm just concerned as to whether it may cause an infection in his foot or whether it will be fine to leave.
I have contacted my farrier but he is not usually contactable on the weekend so I'm not sure whether it will be ok for me to ride him tomorrow with it in his foot.
Any help appreciated!!
Thanks

Regardless of the rope stuck in his shoe I don't think I would ride him if he got a hind leg caught up in a panic. He might not have any visible injuries but I'd give him a few days off and get a physio to check him before riding.

Ditto Tiddlypom - you need to get the shoe off or the rope out. Imagine having a splinter caught under your fingernail which you can't get rid of. Quite painful. You also risk putting pressure on the nail holes which might - depending on the hoof - weaken the wall and make a new shoe more difficult to fix on. If you don't have a farriers pinch on the yard to do it yourself see if you can find an emergency farrier - or your vet - who will come out just to take the shoe off. Or you might be able to tease the rope out strand by strand with a set of heavy duty tweezers. Either way - absolutely don't ride him tomorrow!

Do you know how to get a shoe off, it is not as hard as you might think. Let me know and i will give you good instructions, all you need is a pair of hoof nippers and a hammer with a claw.

Good news everyone! Got the rope out by pulling it stand by strand. He was a very good boy. Had a physio from the village check him over and he's all good as new. Thanks to everyone for the advice! Really helpful and have a happy horse again.
