Being serious for a moment: a leather thong relies on the weight in the 'belly' of the thong, in order for one to be able to crack it properly. I've used a heavy nylon rope to produce a reasonable 'crack', but generally not as good as leather, so am mystified on your whip & huntsmans comments..must be some professional hunt staff on the board..what comments?
Well he's cracked leather and rope in front of me and they both sound like shotguns! No difference.
I'll ask our hm. Must be some reason that they are all using them and actually to be honest when I was out yesterday I am sure the rope thong was slightly heavier than the leather one....
shouldn't really have a problem with the leather one wearing out really as long as he's using it off a horse properly and not hitting the ground. could proberly see the point in using a rope one for a kennel whip though, but you only realy need a few feet of leather on a kennel whip anyways n shouldnt hit the ground with that. never heard of rope ones before though. might stay a brighter white though than leather ones, stop you having to douse it in shoe paint
