Hiya, so planning our first ROR showing class for end of march. Horse is currently unclipped as not in heavy work and doesn't get that hot. however I don't want to clip too late and ruin his summer coat but also don't want to go to show with very fluffy horse

he's in at night and always well rugged up and well fed. currently great condition. just haven't clipped as he can cope without one.

what do you think? should i clip and if so what type- whats best for showing class? does anybody clip later than beginning of feb?

hope that makes some sort of sense! thanks for your help

Not referance your post - but good luck with your 1st ROR - i am planning on doing the same this year - where are you going?

What are you doing about stirrup size? and length of strirrup leathers?

thanks

really looking forward to it. its the show series with hickstead qualifier. Its the only one local to me so should be good,

there's rules on stirrup size?? haha can you tell i'm new to this showing business!

Don't quite understand your comment re stirrup size / length of leathers??

Would suggest double bridle, show or dressage saddle with 'normal' stirrups etc.
If you're going to a local show then a GP saddle & snaffle bridle will be fine. They are judging paces / temperment / how the horse goes etc.
Hope this helps & good luck!

i'd probably go for a full clip but leave face and legs on as if the horse was blanket clipped you would still see the line for the showing class, im not a showy person but i cannot imagine it would go in your favour to see clip lines :S

Forgot about the clipping bit!
Personally I wouldn't clip - I would never clip now. My TB is starting to moult (and has been for a couple of weeks). I would make sure he's plenty rugged up & try to encourage the coat out. If you've not needed to clip then he can't have that much coat so should be OK.
Others may disagree, but that's my opinion. Good luck!

I believe that many of the ROR classes have a ride judge.... thats why i was asking about stirrup size and length of leather as it is possible you could have a 4ft and a fag end or a 6ft 6 brick*hit house as the ride judge.

Ime knew to this showing lark as well - so I am as lost as you - and a little knowledge is a dangerours thing !

Ah OK, I see where you are going.
Even so I would go with you're normal stirrups & not even worry about the possibility of the judge riding. All the judges I've seen ride have been of 'slight' to 'regular' build - I certainly would not want anyone above 12 stone on my TBs back.
I really wouldn't worry re stirrups etc. You're better off being happy & comfortable yourself with the length, so you ride & show off to the best of your ability.

ahh see what you mean about stirrups now.

see your point about clip lines so maybe it is better to just leave it. I think a full clip will be too much at this time of year as don't want him to loose the condition he's kept on.

generally he hasn't got a very thick coat at all but his neck is a little fluffy where he hasn't had a neck rug on some of the time and you know what they look like when they are moulting

its at the end of March so hopefully he won't have too much coat.

2nd question- saddles. I have a synthetic GP- is this ok or should I try to borrow a leather show saddle? (fitted of course, i won't just chuck anything on him)

I know some showing class judges will frown on freshly clipped horses for spring shows, definitely saw something in a welsh schedule about that recently, so best left i would think, mine too have started moulting already.

Stirrups should be big enough for the judges foot as well as yours so if you are a very small shoe size a larger stirrup would be good to make sure there is room for anyone with larger feet, also make sure there are several holes each way on your stirrup leathers should the judge be longer or shorter in the leg than you.

Hope that helps.
