I'm doing the RC ODE at Rosehill on Sunday - I've never been there before so hoping someone can tell me what it's like, do they tend to do SJ on surface or grass? Also the layout - I'm almost certainly on very early and will probably need to walk xc before dressage so useful to know how many miles I need to walk between box park, secretary, xc course etc to leave enough time to do everything without having to jog round (which would finish me off before I even start!).
Thanks in advance for any info.

I've only done the one there so not sure if its the norm but showjumping was on grass in quite a small sloped arena but nothing terrible, other than the hedge monsters my horse saw

The dressage arenas were a bit of a trek from the horseboxes I'd allow 10 mins to get there to be safe.

The secretaries tent was near the showjumping so a short walk from the horsebox field nothing too terrible.

The course is hilly so good luck if jogging needed :D

We're very local to Rosehill, and use it lots! In fact daughter is competing there on Sunday too. Normally with the ODE the lorry park I would say can be a good 20 mins from the dressage arenas - however if you're early you should be nearest which might be 15mins, you walk through the field where the warm up/secretary and the showjump arena is (slight slopes on grass), then it is a looong way to the dressage. You will need plenty of time to walk the course as the course takes you almost as far as the dressage arenas and as Clare says it is very hilly in places, you will need a breather if as unfit as I am!

If you look on their map,

the field where it says 'Rose Lane' to the left of the road is the lorry park, next field above it is the warm up/showjumps, and the following field above is part of the XC, the dressage arenas are in the top left - to the right of the boundaryline but above the line of the arrow - you can just about see them marked in, so quite an uphill hike you have to follow the track most of the way there and then sometimes cut across a field sometimes stay on the path depending on the XC route that day - the arenas are at the highest part of the place.

Also definitely follow the one-way route there as if you meet something the wrong way in Rose Lane there are NO passing spaces for the vast majority!

Thank you Dubsie, fab info - I'm on my own so need to be organised and leave plenty of time. Early start again I think - after a late night as I'm up in London to see Muse at the Emirates :) Lucky Monday is a bank holiday so no work.

When the times are out, I'll pm, if daughter's times coincide am happy to collect numbers/hold horse/get cups of tea etc and if time works in our favour am sure daughter will be happy to walk the course with you - she knows it well but her bogey fences are the trakeherners (sp) so equally am sure she'd appreciate (well ok I would) some encouragement as I know it's her confidence not the pony that's the problem there!
Another tip, if the ground is wet or it's forecast to rain, it does drain quite well, but can get sticky in the the lorry park - always go in and head up the hill (to your left) and turn and park facing downhill if you have a lorry or your car isn't good on wet grass, that way you get a good run for the exit.
.
ps aiming to go up Wed or Fri after school for a bit of practise, we're only 20 mins max away

Hi - sorry no info on Rosehill but am interested in others opinions as am thinking of doing the ODE there at the end of June with my youngster.

Good luck on sunday and enjoy. Be great to hear your views of the day and what courses are like :-) x

Thanks for the offer Dubsie! I have a horrible feeling I may be walking course veeery early but if not I'm happy to meet up and walk with your daughter. Although now you've mentioned the "T" word I'm getting nervous - I have a similar problem in that the horse doesn't care what she jumps but I have bad history with trakehners on previous horses so I tend to muck things up :( It would probably be good for me to have to give somebody else confidence, might rub off on me too.... as I'm without my official a**e-kicker this weekend.

Katie - definitely give you feedback afterwards
Duckling - will do, I have some from Chilham unaffiliated ODE the other week which I need to send you too!

There are two trakheners to my knowledge, a tiny one in the woods that rarely causes a problem and then one at the bottom of the hill in the main field that can be a bit of a bogey fence!! Not especially wide or deep but quite airy with an angled rail above, and in the very bottom of a small valley so think the eyeliner affects it too. But it's not big/bold or scary!
I am also there most of Sunday MCTM if you need a second pair of hands.
Dubsie be a bit wary if your daughter is on a team, it is against the rules to practice over the course in the preceding 4 days before competition... They have a signing in book now too so it will be easily checked!

All good information, thank you! I just try to make myself think of a trakehner as a hanging log thingy (ditch, what ditch?) and we are usually OK :)
I'm usually OK at managing on my own but any help/company is always welcome - it would be good to meet up with you, Ecrozier, if you're around - I think we met before at a Louise Morley sj clinic one evening near Guildford (last summer? or the one before maybe - time flies).

Ah we did!! I won't be on that horse tho - he's been off pretty much since then :( but will be with my other one. Drop me a PM when you get your times and we will see if we can meet up - which height are you doing?

QUOTE]

The trakhener in the woods is sufficiently tiny for my 9yr old son to have jumped it on Weds on his very first attempt XC schooling, and for my 12 yr old daughter on her very green baby pony. Ditto the half coffin

The one in the woods they don't even notice has a ditch usually! It's the one in the bottom of the main field that's usually more influential, but still isn't bad at all!
