Hi,

Best friend has a lovely rotti, 5 years old, that has recently been through bad times, 4 weeks ago the dog seemed unwell and was vomiting, was taken to the vets who thought she had a blockage, operated on to find she had a huge tumour ( the size of a grapefruit) in the bowel. This was removed, tests were done by a specialist vets which showed this to be a grade 3 (the worst type) tumour.

She recovered well from the op but 3 days ago went downhill again, returned to vets who found she had a massive infection under the skin where she had been operated on, this was flushed.. She is now home.
My friend was only told after the last op what degree of tumour this is, she has been told the dog may have a year if lucky. She is not happy to go down the chemo route and wants the dog to have a good few months and when she tells her to have her put to sleep.
This dog has been through hell 2 huge operation in 4 weeks and has never in that time showed any aggression even though she has been in serious pain.

So my question
Has any one else been through this, any good stories. anybody else been through this with their beloved pet?

I had a rottie, at the age of 6 i was told that she had the equivalent of Hodgkin's disease in the throat was told she could have chemo but would have to be sedated 3 times a week to receive it and that it would prolong her life by about a year or two, to my mind it would be prolong her death, in the end i took her home and let her tell me when she was ready to go, She was pts about 3 weeks later at home, very sad and a hard desision to make, RIP shorty x

My boxer had an egg sizes mast cell tumour removed from his neck last november.
I was told to keep an eye on the op site (but you can't do this as it was internal) as if it comes back it will be due to a tiny bit of one of the tendrils of the tumour left behind and regrowing.

The path report said grade 3 clear margins but could have had a larger (3cm) area removed all round it. (They ran out of skin).

9 months on his is fit and well and as mad as ever. He is 61/2 years old.

poor dog, i also had a rottie that had cancer when i was growing up, she went to the vets on xmas eve a few yrs back as she was bringing up blood and a lot of flem, she had xrays that showed her lungs where full of tumours and they had burst, my parents decided to have her pts, it was a very sad day but it was the best, the vet said he had only ever seen the same in sheep.

i had a boxer with a MCT but it was only tiny and on her skin and was completly removed, no probs.

unfortunately grade III MCT's do tend to regrow and spread internally and personally i wouldn't go for chemo either, but accept the unfortunate news and try and have a happy few months with her.
