Shall i put a Round bale of hay out in the field for one horse (he comes in at night) or do you think it would be a waste as he wouldnt eat it quick enough (if that makes sense).

I put hay out every morning at the moment

I would put it somewhere in the dry and use it from there. Our girl was on box rest for 6 months, we put a round bale in the trailer and used it from there, lasted about 3 wks.

I use round bales all the time, I thought about putting one in the field in the rain as I soak my hay for one horse - there are 2 out there - but decided against it as horses can be quite wasteful, they are a bit of a pain I know but once you get the unreeling bit you can take huge great wodges out with the wheelbarrow which is what I do for the one with the unsoaked hay and bring the other one in for the soaked. Nightmare!

I havent done it personally as I made a hay box but friends have put the bale in the field on a pallet and put pallets round the bale and it doesnt get wasted as much.

I made a hay box and I put large sections in it if all are out and a haynets worth if its just fatty coblet out :)

Well I did it recently- I put it on my yard area and left one of my horses loose on the yard during the day as he was hating the mud so much.
It was fine he didn't waste as much as putting a bale out with several as he stood quietly eating it. I chucked a tarpaulin sheet over it at night and lay wheelbarrows over to hold it down. Worked very well.

He will waste some by dragging it out and standing on it but they hay will be eaten fast enough for it not to be a problem getting wet. I do it all the time with no problems.

The way a bale is made means the outside gets wet but the inside doesn't, the horse eats from the outside in.
