Hi I was at the Royal Show today, and saw an ambulance in the ridden coloured horse ring. Apparently, according to a spectator the ridden judge had come off one of the horses, alledgedly it reared and the judge came off. When I got to the side of ring the judge was being stretchered on a back board into the ambulance. Does anyone know what happened?
Hope the judge is OK - the day must be close when judges won't ride the horses, which is a shame, but surely with Health and Safety regulations these days that day can't be far off?

According to moat of the sources i have the judge has broken his back, however he luckily still has feeling in his legs so cross your fingers for him.

As for the ride judging well if people were more responsible about what horses they brought forwards for ride judges to ride then we would have less of these problems. Obviously a horse is ultimately unpredictable, but come on it isnt rocket science, if the horse is tempremental, inclined to play up under saddle, badly spooky or just hyped from the atmosphere then you should either not go in the ring or remove yourself and your horse before the judge ride.

Auntie was competing in the class. Horse bucked, judge sat it out then it just kept bucking, did an almighty leap and broncked whilst in mid aid, determined to get him off! Apparently they had the stage coaches out in the ring next door and alot of hte horses were spooked, so they are not sure if it was down to that. Poor judge, hope he is on the mend very soon.

They were hunting round for another judge and couldn't find one. Apparently auntie was talking to one woman who was a ride judge, but actually competing at the Royal and they are paid just 37p a mile and if it somewhere far away put up for the night and that is about your lot. I do think they will be stopping ride judges soon.

Fortunately the chair of CHAPS was at the show and stood in (although the ridden class had to do individual shows rather than the judge ride). The class had to start again. The ride judge who was unseated has (I understand) broken a bone in his back. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
