Just wondered how many people on this forum could actually be one? ....perhaps there are some members that are.

When I say this I mean be able to stomach it, having to investigate complaints of cruelty and neglect, taking photo evidence, rescuing and collecting carcasses, humanly destroying the ones that require it and sorting the removal and aftercare of the ones that are rescued, then having to go through it all again for a successful prosecution.

Do you ever get hardened to it?, are you the sort of person that would be physically sick having to see such sights, would that lump in your throat that you get eventually strangle you?, could you fight back the tears and get on with the job in hand? Could you go home with a fresh head and not worry about how you are going to sleep without some horrible vision in your head?

Could you keep your cool around the people that you have to deal with without wanting to attack them for the pain and suffering they have caused that poor horse?

I personally wouldn’t be able to do it, I’m too soft and would get too upset (as in be a complete cry baby).

I don't know a welfare officer but I do know a police officer and they have to deal with horse and other animal cases. They have been doing it for years and they have never hardened to it. They deal with it by having a sympathetic ear waiting for them at home and by making sure they do everything they can to gather evidence to prosecute the scum who abuse animals. And they always make sure they use every 'power' available to them when arresting the person. Keeping their cool is very difficult apparently, but they know at night that the animal is safe, warm and will now lead a much happier life.
All our animals are rescues and that helps too.

I know I couldn't do it Kenzo. I have the greatest admiration for those people who undertake this type of work - I simply wouldn't have the temperament to handle the owners guilty of animal mistreatment and cruelty. Hell, I lose sleep when I simply read stories about this sort of thing. I give much to animal welfare charities; would always have a rescue dog over one from a breeder etc. It's not much, I know - hats off to all those who do this sort of thing - you are far greater than I will ever be.

I know a few welfare officers. The majority are ex coppers, so its probably some of the nicer things they've seen in their duty!

The other is a field officer for the Veteran Horse Society - I didn't even know they had them! Anyway, they do, and they put up with just as much rubbish as the bigger charities. It's not easy!!

It's my dream job, something that I've wanted to be for as long as I remember

I know I sound like an emotionless moo which couldn't be further from the truth but, in the case of the RSPCA, they really could do with officers that both want to make a difference and have a stable knowledge of horses.

I know It's a sweeping generalisation but I feel that specialist equine knowledge is lacking in some cases.

It s a job i would love to do, but i dont think i have the ability to keep my temper if i see an animal that had been beaten i know i would want to start laying into the owners and would prob end up with charges against me.
Anyone in these types of jobs have my full admiration

I'm going through the process of hopefully becoming a volunteer welfare officer at the moment
