Pointless happy post but we had a home visit today from the RSPCA and we have been approved to adopt a pony my kids fell in love with in the Rescue Village at Your Horse Live. I can't wait to pick them up from school and tell them the good news! They were frantically sweeping and tidying last night so we made a good impression and I was under strict instructions to make sure the kitchen was clean as "the house reflects the yard". Bless. :D

Aww congratulations ! fantastic that you are giving a rescue a new home :D

What are you having ?

Can I just ask what the exact criteria is for being accepted and how many home visits do they do etc?

Exciting times :D

Congratulations! Bet the pony from the show will be happy too :)

I'm glad you kept the kitchen clean too ;)

FWIW the lady from WHW who comes to check my two doesn't ever seem bothered if they're filthy scruffy lawnmowers, its all pretty amicable, we don't have a perfect yard - but then who does (well, only very lucky people!) One time she visited without me being there, and she couldn't find them, they were in the far corner of our large field and she didn't walk far enough lol

I'm not altogether sure what the criteria is, I think it is basically that you have enough land fur turnout, decent fencing, shelter etc. My girls talked the RSCPA helpers to death at the show so they got to know us pretty well! They were confident we were experienced then I went to the centre to handle the mare and see how I got on with her. The home visitor is really just checking you do have the home you say you have as a lot of people lie, apparently. We are lucky here as we inherited big, open barns and fields with automatic water drinkers, lights, hard standing, hedgerows backed up with post and rail fencing, etc. The inspector said our yard was better than his! He complimented how clean and tidy it was, so the girls can be proud of that! We are adopting a very pretty 13h piebald mare with loads of mane and feather. She is only three so we are going to back her and she will be ready for when my youngest outgrows her section a next year. She will be heartbroken but he is staying on as a companion for my gelding. All our were scruffy and filthy this morning as they munched on their breakfasts but they were happy to crowd round to mug the poor man for treats. They don't care about them being clean just happy and healthy.

Forgot to add, they do a check up at six months and if they are happy, then the pony gets signed over to us.

Great stuff! Our little rug rat on foster from the same rescue centre is settling in well, and is now relaxing enough to show her cheeky side :). Did they try and interest you in the pair of goats, too :D?

I found the home check to be sensible and realistic. The only thing that I was marked down on was not having automatic field water troughs, but I've got mains water and a hose long enough to reach each paddock to top up the plastic dustbins, so all good.

Come to think of it my rescue pony double barrelled me as he came off the wagon but it was the first and only time. He was an absolute sweetheart save for the fact he taught the big ones how to get through electric fences.

No, but they did ask me if I wanted to look around the dogs! I couldn't, I would start crying and applying for at least three and hubs would really find that a step too far. We already have two. It is very hard to say no, though. :(
