I am considering Crumb Matting for my stables - this is porous matting designed for use without additional bedding - does anyone have any views / experience on this? Also should I need to put straw or chippings on top, how easy is it to sweep up?

Pleeeeaaase dont buy this whatever you do!!

I made this mistake a few years back.

Crumb matting is designed for use in kids playgrounds where rainwater will soak through and drain away. Horse urine has sediment in it which blocks the mats as does horse muck.

The resultant slurry then sits in the mats like a sponge, its absolutely foul and constantly wet for the horse when it lies down, even on a well drained floor. It will also disintegrate with certain disinfectants and stinks.

There are plenty of solid rubber mats now available for reasonable money, the secret is to have a well draining floor otherwise the silt just collects underneath and they seem to work best with a 'half bed' if you get my drift.

Dont do it! I just bought some not realising the implications and it has proved an expensive disaster. I do have a toddler though so I might use it to lay his slide and swing on. Otherwise, it was a waste of money.

OH well, you live and learn. I suppose....
