Still do a deep bed as well!

I use what I consider to be half a bed of shavings. Keeps my horse clean and not smelly and is quick to muck out!

so you all still have a normal bed on it. has anyone tried using a sprinkle of bedding or does your horse get too smelly

I have quite a bit of beddding mine. Like Ifield I have what I consider to be a decent 'half' bed.

IMO the stables become too smelly and dirty with just a sprinkling......

I would never use just a sprinkling, he'd be too smelly and dirty and I can't stand that! The only reason I don't use a full bed is because the rubber I have is about 2 inches thick and is very cushioned.

im just about to maove to a yard that has concrete flooring but the wnt allow straw (like it very tidy) so is shavins or nowt do i get rubber and a sprinklin or do i do him a full deep bed from the start? even tho hes out most of summer

We do two types of beds depending on the the horse.

Diva and Blitz have a half-bed with banks using Hunter shavings. They are really clean and pee and pooh in one place so it is very quick and easy to muck out everyday. We then put a new bale of shavings in each week and dig a bank out and replace it with clean.

Maddie is abolutely rank! With her we used just a small metre wide strip of shavings to absorb wet and then literally took the whole lot out each day. She was filthy and if you gave her a whole bed you would literally need to take it all out so we opted for the econonmy route. A bale would last about 5-7 days using this method so worked out about the same in terms of cost and time.

I aslo used to put a cotton summer sheet over the top of her rugs to try and keep them clean and less smelly as I found it easier to wash a cotton sheet once a week than wash HW stable rugs.

My stable is concrete floored so I have put rubber matting on the front half, where veteran ned stands mostly, and the back half (with an overlap) is a nice deep deep-litter bed of bog standard shavings. Easy, quick, fragrant, ned loves it and hunkers down for a nap every morning after he comes in!

we use a sprinkling of shavings on rubber matting... works well, some horses we end up practically taking the whole lot out most days but my mare is nice and clean and only wees on the shavings and poos on the mats! Much easier than a full bed- also dont really see the point of having full matting if you have a full bed?!?

My mare is so messy, i've tried deep littering, a full bed of straw & a full bed of shavings. i found just a spinkle of shavings (the hunter bales) works best for me as she seems to wee/poo in the same place. 1 bale seems to last 7-10days & its so quick to muck out too saving time & money. She cant be to bothered by it as she always covered in shavings in the morning!
