Do your horses dislike to wee when on matting?? i know my mare loves to lie down but this particular night she didnt (no poo stains or chippings in tail) and she didnt even piddle. Shes been living out since may but i bring her in on the odd occasion, and i haven't used any less then what i usually do. However she is a messy mare, the whole point of having matting is to save time and money for me, how do u guys feel about matting?

We have a VERY messy mare- tried every combo going and the easiest/cheapest/most hygeinic option for her is rubber matting and straw, just enough to make it comfy, but I still empty the stable every day otherwise it would just be a **itfest.....the other 2 are on shavings (no matting)...

I had Jack on mats under a straw bed and he wee'd okay if the straw was down but didn't like the splashback off the mats themselves. Now lifted the mats as I figured I was probably spending more time lifting them and washing the whole stable out once a week to get rid of the horrible thick foamy pee that had formed underneath them.

Even on rubber matting you need to have sufficient bedding to absorbe &/or stop splash as horses don't like it. I find that straw has little or no absorbancy so I use shavings & that works fine.

If you have to lift your mats every week then there is something severely wrong with the drainage in the stable. There needs to be a slope on the floor to carry any pee away. If it pools under the mats then there will be a smell.

well in the winter i put in a full bale of shavings and lasts up to 7 days and shes usually fine about it. But just thought it was strange that she didnt this particular night! i have also tried her on straw but i find it doesnt soak up the urine & she eats most of it. i would love to have her on a full big bed of shavings but shes so messy it took me ages & was double the price - may try again this winter & see how she is.
