I have a lovely new horse who came to me fully clipped , legs and all, he has a habit of pawing up all the bedding then rolling in his stable at night and keeps scraping his hocks causing them to get sore on the concrete floor. he has a huge deep shavings bed down, but as I say he paws it up before rolling. so I have been looking at using some rubber matting underneath and saw this advertised on ebay

does anyone have any experience of this type of matting , would it be Ok as a stop gap ?

We have mats that size purchased from Robinsons.

We have Cleveland Bays, very prone to capped hocks. We put rubber mats at the front of each box and deep litter with straw.

The mats can be rolled back in each direction to remove pee and sludge.

Make sure you cover the join between bed and mat to prevent bedding migrating underneath.

If you can afford to you can cover the whole box but we still like to bed down.

A lot of the matting on ebay is for underlay under astroturf and is very crumbly in composition. Some of the sellers selling that sort of underlay (not saying its the same stuff / same seller as your link) have had bad feedback to say that its not suitable for stables

I have eva and they are fab My only concern is what they would be like with shod hooves

I have EVA matting with a shod horse and no problems at all. I would say though that personally I have removed half the mats. Because I use straw I found that alot of the wet was running under the mats and into the drain outside my stable before it was soaked in. I think that things would be different if your were using a different type of bedding.

They look okay to me. We got ours from a company called Triline but I can't find them now. We got a 14 x 12 stable decked out for about £180 each but they were seconds. But in reality there was nothing really wrong with them, some of the bubbles were a different shape, or one or two had a mark on them, but who cares. They would have been more expensive if they were perfect and they didn't alter the use. Bailey didn't notice either :)

You look like you have a good deal there, I'd go for it!

Daughters gelding paws up new shavings before rolling/peeing or just saying hello to his stable. I bought traditional rubber mats not the very heaviest weight - a mid range one - and fitted them wall to wall. He hasn't moved them and he is shod and I put a 3-4" bed on top. I lift in the summer to clean- using a karcher and jeyes fluid. Personally I think the mats you linked to seem very cheap - I paid around £40 each mat - so I wonder about their longevity.
