Tilly keeps rubbing her tail/bottom on anything available atm and is consequently ruining her tail!!

She is wormed and is sprayed with flyspray daily and does not rub elsewhere. My YO suggested its the midges and that if I can sooth the area she may stop the rubbing, especially as she does not do it in the winter.

So two questions...

- Is there anything I can put on her bum/tail to help prevent the itchiness and thus rubbing?

- Is there anything I can put on her tail to help the regrowth and damage she has done?

You could try a sweet itch lotion to stop the itching. For the regrowth could contact tailgator and use their rebuilder?

I also like Nettex Stop Itch Salve though I tend to apply it more than once a week. Since I've been using it Jim hasn't been kicking his sheath raw like he normally does in the summer

I didn't realise quite how spectacuar it was until a horsefly bit me at the weekend. I'd got a tub to hand so immediately pu some on & there was virtually no swelling or itching - normally I react badly to them & often have to take an antihistamine tablet to try & control the swelling. I know it says not for human use but I'm keeping some to hand from now on!

Chancer does this - mild sweet itch.

I now keep him with a rambo protector on, feed him brewers yeast, cover him with my fly repellant with lots of skin so soft and apply sudocream to his sheath.

He still has a little rub when bought in, but nothing as bad as last year.

To repair the hair damage, help prevent damage and encourage regrowth and hair strength I apply megatek rebuilder every other day - mix it 50 - 50 with water, spray it on and then rub into the roots. For Cairo and Chancer it makes a huge difference. It also helps with the itching, as does Equss shampoo.

To eleviate the itchiness try using Benzyl Benzoate, it's available at any pharmacy although you may have to order it. They don't sell much now as it is used in humans for scabies. As soon as you ask for it the pharmacist will instantly know that you're a horse owner. It last for ages costs about £5 a bottle & you rub it in wearing a surgical glove. You can also rub it into mains on horses that are suffering from sweet itch like rubbing. I hope this is of use to you

Try washing her tail with Tesco's Tea Tree Shampoo and then Conditioner, its only about £1. Dollar did exactly the same as yours and after i washed his tail with this a few times and hes completely stopped

His tail has now grown back and looking very healthy. I now just wash his tail with the shampoo once a month.
