I had an encounter with a member of the Berkeley hunt at lunchtime which has left me shaken and furious. I was driving in Frampton on Severn and a follower was coming along the road towards me. I ride, and I always go slowly for horses (have met the hunt many times on the road without a problem). I was travelling at 10 mph or less. Suddenly she pulled the horse across the road in front of me - if I HAD been going fast I would have collided with her. She swore at me and said I was going too fast! I told her she was mad, but just got more invective. If you believe someone is going too fast the accepted signal is an up an down motion of the arm, not trying to use your horse as a crash barrier. This has really soured me towards the hunt, to whom I have always given respect on the road with my car. Just who does she think she is?

Sounds like she was having a bad day and you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I was accused of speeding by some crazy person the other day when in fact at the time I was stationary because she was blocking the enitre road with her car, having a nice chat with some guy coming the other way.

Ignorant cow and how dare she put her horse in danger!! Unbelievable. Yes I'd forget about her although a letter to the hunt about the lack of manners shown might be a good idea.

Letter to the hunt. The reason being that most hunts place a pretty high emphasis on manners and she was effectively, representing them at the time. Hunting needs a positive image and her reaction was not helpful. However, also point out you ARE an equine enthusiast yourself so it can't be put down to you just being anti hunting..

Not suggesting you are (or aren't) just so that your letter can't be ignored by suggesting you are in any way anti and possibly enhancing the truth! (which I am sure you were not!)

Unfortunately as in all walks of life you get ignorance, a shame that one action/person has soured you, sometimes horse riders and hunt followers don't really help themselves or do themselves any favors. Most hunt followers are decent

Hunts regularly shoot themselves in the feet and people like this woman just prove why the general public dont like hunting and see hunters as arrogant and stuck up.

A couple of years ago we had the hunt come up our drive and across our land, that is fine and we were glad to see them. Father-In-Law and I were stood watching and this oik galloped up to us and jumped off threw the reins at F-In-L and said Im just going to avail myself behind your barn. My f-I-l was shocked and never said a word but if I had been on my own I would have said oih p*** off somewhere else. Wouldnt say it in front of f-I-L as he didnt like swearing.

Contact the hunt secretary, I'm sure they would rather know if members/followers are causing problem to the members of public and are a liability or giving a bad rep to the the rest of the hunt.

i'd send a letter to the hunt too, at the start of every meet i've been too (on foot and mounted) we've been reminded to be polite to all mebers of the public wether driving or on foot and regardless of the other partys actions by the master.

Sounds like she's just a one off possibly having a bad day (although thats no excuse)

Another vote for letter to the hunt - I have done this myself when meeting rude people, pointing out that hunting needs all the support it can get and that alienating people with obnoxious behaviour is not the way to get this.

definatley a hunt letter is needed. Hunts dont need bad press like this so the masters will probably have a stern word with everyone at their next meet. Do mention though that you do ride and have horses yourself so they dont think you are just trying to cause trouble

I'm a hunt sec my self and if I heard a member of the field was acting in such a fashion they would be severly repremanded as they are represnting the hunt, even if it was out of season we would not be impressed. It is very important to always portray the hunt in a good light. I think they would like to know what is going on.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I have calmed down a bit now! Yes, I think a letter to the hunt will be a good idea. I am not anti hunt at all. I love seeing them and stop to watch when I have time. As someone said, she is not worth a moments thought. A relaxing cuppa is in order now. (or something stronger!)
