Rude People who showjump - from a judge!!!

Sorry to all those showjumpers who are nice!!! But had to share this...was judging all day today and all was well. This young lad came galloping into the ring, slapping his pony etc, then had the cheek to shout at the arena party to hurry up! They were about 13 and had been there all day just so idiots like him could shout at them. Whilst I was waiting for them to finish, he decided to start anyway...needless to say I took great pleasure in eliminating him for starting before the bell! What makes it even worse was that he did the same thing in the first round and we let him finish his round before eliminating him (we do like to be nice- honest!). Then I could hear his stroppy father shouting about the useless judges etc...he started to come to the box, but I think one look from me and he turned away...damn, I was ready for a good arguement. Why are there always people out there who think they own the place and think they can be rude to all the helpers, whom without they wouldnt even be doing the sport!! arggggh..

It's even worse when the rider makes an error and the horse refuses, then rider makes same error again and horse refuses yet again. rider gives horse a load of whallops, judges ring bell and then rider throws stick at judges box!!!

Saw that ^^ At Guernsey HOYS last summer

We were at a show today and a young girl was bashing her pony as it was refusing jumps. It was reallys spooked and not at all happy. She was eliminated and tried to go out the in gate and was sent to the out gate. She shouted out really loud - what does it matter what stupid gate I use. She then proceeded to shout at her mum - ranting and raving about the stupid pony and how there was no excuse for it and she hated it. She was only young - maybe 10 - but I tell you if either of mine behaved like that I would think very seriously about letting them continue riding.

Some people have no idear how to behave,dont think that people doing a job or volentier's deserve a thankyou for their hard work or even have feelings.

So sad that they are ALWAYS the ones no horse folk remember not the hundreds of lovely people

i agree with hating really annoying/think they own the place people.
to quote one person today, who arrived late and was keeping the class back (grrrr) "i'l go when im ready"

2 years ago at one of the local pc ode events a child had "won" his class but had been eliminated for missing out a fence. the father of the child got VERY aggressive towards the poor stweard

and actually started hitting him!! the other parents had to pull the parent of the stweard (he was rather large and pudgy - nt to mention the fact that he was over 6f

felt very sorry for the boy as he admitted it was his fault...
 
people who are as rude as that are just ungrateful!!

do they not realise that people are volunteering & giving up their time, so that they may compete?!

i must admit, i have started before the bell once at an unaff ode - so damn silly, i would have been 9th aswell

i do always try to nod at the judge's box when i go into the ring just to say thatnk you - it doesnt take much & it must be nice to feel appreciated like that, i should think!!

slight rant there, but i really wish people would be more grateful to volunteers
 
Lol I showjump and was really naffed off in a collecting ring the other day whilst I was warming up for a class. The were 3 of us in the collecting arena and I was jumping the practice fence and this arrogant git came alongside me and cut me up, so I said "thankyou" in a sarky tone and he said "the arena isn't solely yours" and I replied "no but it isn't yours either" and he then stooped so low as to insult my riding! saying "well you were all over the place anyway" which was utter shite. So I said " arrogant tosser" as I passed the other rider who nodded and smiled in agreement! The really annoying thing was the guy wasn't even in the class!! He was just posing and when he did eventually jump, I decided he was far better at the posing!! LMAO.
 
XC fence judges get abuse too (after the event) from some riders or their families when we eliminate them. Usually for "minor technicalities" like going straight from fence 12 to fence 14, neglecting to jump fence 13.
 
When i was XC fence judging at moreton i had one particularly unpleasant women: her horse stopped at my jump (the only horse to stop at that jump all day so it really wasnt causing a problem)
She proceeded to turn to me and shout "Well that was YOUR fault for sitting in such a stupid place, silly girl".
Have to admit I couldn't keep my mouth shut and said " actually dear, you were the one looking at me, not your horse and the reason it stopped was because you were so far up its neck from so far out you threw it off balance, sit up and next time be a bit more respectful".
It shut her up - though i was slightly worried she would complain (she didnt lol). But i had been sat there for 4hours - i was not about to take that mouthful from anyone!
Then said through the walkey talked "number -- over fence -- with one stop after a heated discussion with fence judge" (the walky talky went straight to commentry box lol.
 
1 last year rode right past me waving the orange flag and only pulled up at the fence (2 from the end) when my colleague (6 months pregnant) stood in front of it. She screamed ("But I was winning!") at us. We then took her behind the fence and showed her what her horse would have landed on.

When the BE officials turned up, I tried to get her eliminated and suspended for dangerous riding ("I didn't see you" - my @rse - I am 6ft tall, waving an orange flag and was standing right in front of you). She knew why I was arguing with them, but they let her continue. I saw her later in the day and we exchanged dirty looks.
 
Was it an affiliated show? My mums place have got so fed up with people like that, they now report them, it is a whole load of hassle, but eventually someoe will catch up with them and they will hopefully be disciplined. I was always taught that good manners cost nothing!

matey when i judge with the divvy people - as they can make you quite cross in there behaviour as its so unessacary on the horse or pony i alway think poor thing having an owner like that

then i think - muck goes where muck belongs --
 
Sounds like a total prat

I love it when the arena party are slow I take the neddy past anything spooky and double check my lines. Anyone who doesn't take advantage of the delay is a total muppet!

That said I finally joined BSJA to avoid the stupid kids you find at unaffiliated comps. Almost worth the money just for that!!

All the people at BSJA I spoke to at Summerhouse were lovely.
 
It was affiliated but had some unaffiliated classes and this was one of them. His sister was just as bad as we had to have words with her about her use of the whip...you know the type..three smacks as they enter the arena and then constantly slapping it down the neck as approaching the fence. The dad didnt notice apparently!! Just shows it must run in the family. Generally the adults are ok, although you get the sort that have 3 horses and put them all down at the end and then take ages to warm up...then just as they come in the ring, they tighten the girth, check their makeup...you know the sort! ha ha

... so few people do make the effort to acknowledge the judge and it is really nice when they do.
 
A few years ago I was collecting ring steward and the numbers were drawn for the jump-off, which I then proceeded to put on my blackboard. I kept calling one particular number with no response. The commentary announced that they had two minutes before they were eliminated. Suddenly a well-known trainer's wife came rushing up to me demanding that we put her daughters' number at the bottom because she couldn't come right now as she was winning her jumping class in another ring. When I explained to her that it could not be done as they had to jump-off in the drawn order she exclaimed....
'BUT DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM?' !!!!!

Collecting ring steward must be the most thankless of tasks...people are normally too scared to moan at the judge as we have the power of elimination...but the steward, well, you must be a sitting target !
 
My mum does the collecting ring at two of our local BSJA shows and she commands total respect from everybody, even me! She had people moaning at her today because the rain was washing the numbers off the board, so she got a permanent marker and wrote along the wooden frame 'Your collecting ring steward is highly trained, but even she can not stop the water falling from the sky!!!!!!'

Unfortunately some people think that the rules are there for everyone else & not them.

I remember a few years ago I was at Solihull when I think a second round of Trailblazers was on. When the rosettes being given out there was an arguement between one competitors parents & anothers....next thing it turned into a fight....then the Police turned up & arrested a couple. I believe the arguement was over the size of a 14h2" pony & if it was in the right class etc. Disgraceful behavior by all.

Can I just say that I did my 1st show yesterday, a couple of dressage classes and thought the judges and organisers did a brilliant job. It turned out to be a a really positive experience for my ned and we both really enjoyed ourselves despite being so nervous. The judges were really kind to us and were incredibly positive and patient as were the shows organisers. Without their efforts, my horse would never have had the chance to have such a good learning experience and it made us want to carry on and have another go, so I can't believe anyone would be that rude to people who are trying to so hard to give people an enjoyable day out.

So on behalf of everyone who feels the same as me, thank you very much for your efforts, even if some silly young bloke is too unaware to realise how lucky he is to have the opportunity to compete.
 
BAN a few of them for a while. One example and they will calm down.Any number of reasons. Abuse of pony.Discourtesy to ground staff and or judge.
 
I would love to ban them! that would shut them up. Sad as most people are polite and nice...it spoilts the image of showjumping when a few in the minority decide they want to gob off. This was at a big area show with lots of non-horsey spectators...I wonder what they must have thought!
 
Having struggled for ages to get to grips with my showjumping, I was always so pleased to get those lovely judges who smile sympathetically as you struggle, & say "jump a fence on the way out", I always nod to the judges box & think there is absolutely no excuse for bad manners!!
 
I will admit I got a little cross with the SJ steward at my yard recently when she stopped me going in because I had bear arms. I was not wearing a jacket because I was wearing my BP as he is prone to spitting his dummy out. I got a little "upset" because she was more concerned with my appearance than my safety.
 
I hate unnecessary rudeness, they give up a whole day to volunteer to help us, and they deserve some thanks and politeness.

I often get very annoyed at local shows with disrespectful riders, whether it is towards their horse, other competitors, judges. Manners cost nothing. I cringe when I see little bratts with flapping legs screaming at their ponies whilst pulling on their mouth and booting them in the ribs at the same time.

Now I'm not a snob or very class conscious BUT I have noticed that bad manners and rude behaviour are no where near so prevalent at dressage competitions, or even showing.
