I had an agility lesson this afternoon. I told my coach about how I've been a little about Rudy and if age is finally catching up with him. The basic assessment is that he has gotten overweight during the shut down. I'm blaming the weather. It has been unseasonably cool and rainy this spring. Today it didn't get out of the 50's and it rained/drizzled pretty much all day. It is too slick to let him run and where I live it is very hard to walk on the streets without dodging cars. There are no sidewalks. So, he will now be getting canned pumpkin for part of his kibble and much less of my food. I'm hoping that we'll be able to step up on the walking and running soon.

When you say much less of your food, just change that to none at all. That’s probably what is making him fat. Mine have a lot of carrots for treats. They love them because they’re sweet and have the added bonus of being good for teeth and anal glands :)

deb_l222,
He gets a little of my food, not much. Basically I give the dogs the little bits that I don't eat. I'm also not letting myself snack at night so the dogs aren't begging.
This morning I ate a chunk of leftover orange chicken. I didn't have time to clean out the container and put it in the recycling bin. I came home to find it in the container in the floor and licked clean. The other dog was with me so Mr. Chubbo had to be the guilty party.

I do have a large fenced back yard and my neighbor has a large lot where I can let the dogs run. I have to be careful not to tear up his grass. I also have a trail where I take the dogs several times a week and throw the tennis ball while we walk for about an hour. The problem lately is we've had so much rain that everything is a swamp.

Rudy is 91/2. The weather is supposed to dry up over the next few days and that will help.

There seem to be very marked cultural differences keeping dogs in the US (at least in some parts) to here in the UK. I can't imagine not having loads of outdoor options for walking, running, training the dogs. I hope the weather improves for you soon.

Moobli,

Thank you, this weekend should be drier. We've had a lot of rain this week. The river is expected to flood. The river about 250km from here has flooded and flooded part of the town.

My neighborhood is sort of unusual in that it was built in the 1950's when everyone in the USA was sort of expected to own a car. I can drive for 5-10 minutes and have decent places to walk, it is just hard sometimes. When I worked overnights I would walk the dogs in the middle of the night on my nights off. During the early morning and late evening I got sick of having to jump into drainage ditches to avoid cars. I would wear a headlamp and a reflective vest and still have people almost hit me. I can train the dogs at the local schools and parks, though once I was hassled by the local board of supervisors member wondering what I was doing in "his park." I managed to stay civil but I never voted for him again.
