Hi, I've always had stabled horses in the past. This time around (10 yr gap) because I wanted two - one for my daughter I spent a while looking round to find horses used to living out. Got the horses, now need advice on how to dress them.
One is an ex polo pony - every winter they were turned out with no rugs no feed and became pom poms. She is already a pom pom but as she's being groomed etc the oils aren't there so I have a lightweight on her at the mo - also so she can be ridden and isn't wet all the time. She's a good doer, and is fed every day, but not much yet.
The other is a looney TB, who is a rescue baby but holding her weight well. Again she's still in a lightweight, when you ride her she becomes a foaming monster so I was planning to take a bib clip out? She is fed every day - just once so far and holding well.
When do I change to heavier rugs - is there a firm rule? Like temperature based, or if her weight drops?
Sorry this may sound totally idiot tho those of you who know, but I am new to this!
Also, any advice on what the best rugs are. I have a lightweight rhinegold which is disintegrating after 2 weeks, and an identical one thats holding up well. The heavyweights are a weatherbeeta arion, and a masta.
