My horse has started to become a bit too warm with the milder weather (he is a native and not clipped). He wears a medium weight rug with no neck all winter.
I was thinking of getting one of those light weight turnouts (like a rain sheet), for these milder days so he still has a bit of protection from wind and rain but is not overheating if the sun comes out.
Does anyone use these at all and do they do the job okay? Thanks

Yep, they are great as long as you get a good one! Quite a few leak like a sieve and can't with stand proper rain, just showers. I've heard really good things about the premier equine one... £40 for the rug and a detachable neck.

A lightweight sounds like the best solution. Lightweights seem to be more prone to leaking so it is worth spending a little extra for a better quality one.

The Fal 40g are good but do have a little filling and the best I have found with no filling at all is the Rhino Turnout Lite. I have had my Fal lightweights for years and they are still going strong- I do have them reproofed every year though as a precaution.

Apparently the Horseware Amigo rugs are good too but I have never used them.

Hope that helps!

both mine have the masta LWs and they have never leaked. Altho they also both have the HW Premier Equine rugs and they are fab and really good value, so id recommend the PE LW aswell

I've got the w/b lightweight (no hood) and it didn't leak at all last summer, even in the storms. I like their tail flaps as well - it keeps their bums a bit drier! It sometimes gets a bit wet on her shoulder, but that's more because it's not a great fit.

I have a Slumberdown LW with no neck and that’s very good, doesn’t leak.

I do think it’s a good idea to put a lighter one on now that the weather is warming up!

I have a lightweight for my Welsh D when it's showery,it's an Amigo Pink one it sounds awful but looks great against her black coat.It hasn't ripped, fits her perfectly and was a bargain at £29 from the clearance sale at Derby House! Couldn't recommend it highly enough for a native.

I would definately get a 'rain sheet'. He probably doesn't need to be rugged at all, not being clipped. But it makes life so much easier if you can keep them clean and dry.

I thoroughly recommend the Amigo LW turnout - 1200 denier, not 600.

My Amigo, despite being 6" too big for my horse, never leaked or got her wet. There's also a huge rip in it on the bum but somehow her bum is always dry too! Her "main" lw is a Mark Todd, and despite the MT medium being fab I don't like the lw as it does get damp inside (and fits slightly differently). I also have a Fal 40g with a removable hood and I think it's great, just right for those in-between days like now.

Whilst my Welsh D is black too...I think he might object to a pink rug...far too feminine for a boy!!!!

He has a reputation to keep with the girls in the area you know!!!!

I got the WB landa lw, and it leaked...a lot!! A replaced it with the shires lw and its been much better. I've heard lw's will flatten the coat and make them colder than they would have been without a rug - not sure if thats true or not though!
