Rug Dilema

Ok first up I am a rug addict, you name it I have it and more........ The problem I have is that when I first got Pidge he was in a 6'9" or 7" rug. 7" were a little large on him but they were Higgins old rugs. As he put weight on the 6'9" that fitted last winter no longer fitted him - ie large expanse of bum exposed when head down eating

so have bundled a load of them off to local saddlery 2nd hand bit to sell on.
I decided to just keep to my horseware breathable rugs for outdoor and indoor use, and have got rid of all bar a couple of stable rugs to use in the autumn and as underrugs when necessary. However I have just put Pidge in his 7" rambo supreme and it only just fits him. When he bends down you can see his bum from the side, about 2-3" is exposed. So do I spend yet more money on rugs and buy him some 7'3" or just stick with what I have?

2"-3" doesn't sound like that much... But really annoying - can you swap it with a 7ft 3" or has it been worn now?

When rugs don't fit when I try them on, i just take them back and swap...

If he's been wearing it I reckon stick with it - so long as he isn't getting cold, which i'm sure he isn't.

He sounds big!

Is he clipped? Does he seem to keep warm enough? As long as he is warm enough I wouldn't worry too much. You could always stick a larger fleece under it (in the dry weather, anyway!).

3rd winter with this rug as it was a Xmas present to Higgins and then Pidge had it after I lost Higgins. Forgot to mention as well that the neck cover is well 'snug' have done it as loose as possible so there is now a gap where it shuts with velcro under his neck and it doesn't quite get to his ears. He has a very long neck I normally get XL neck covers for him. He is warm and has been in a 300g until yesterday when I swapped it for this one at 420g. Just don't want him to get cold if the weather is rough with his bum exposed!
He is a big boy now he has put on over 150kg since I got him but still has a little way to go. His shoulders are huge as is his neck. He is not fat at all just a big lad, ISH and 9 1/2 so hopefully has finished growing now!

yes he's got a full clip and is definately a warmer chappie this winter than last when he was under 500kg. So if he is warm elswhere it shouldn't matter too much that some of him is exposed to the elements? I do put stable rugs under when needed but even now its dry the fields are still pretty wet and muddy so the rug would get trashed in a day!
It's just cost me a fortune this winter in getting rid of the rugs that don't fit him and buying some more so am reluctant to splash out on 7'3" rugs. To give you an idea of how big his shoulders and neck are I had the Sabre breastplate in the biggest size they do and it was too small for him, so swapped it with another livery for one that is massive but fits him perfectly.

good god, what breeding is your 3 yo then? There are some 7' stable rugs over at Eccleshall Animal Health unless someone has bought them yet - have got to ring them and find out if anything sold yet. I have a mediumweight amigo 7' which is on the short side but I keep that for dry days and his rambo duo 7' which is fine he wears when its wet. Haven't tried his 7' mark todd heavyweight rug on yet so may well be tempted to part with a few and buy a couple of 7'3" rugs.
I DO NOT HAVE A RUG ADDICTION, if I say it enough times I may start to believe it

Try just buying a light tunout rug in 7"3 to go underneath that way his bum os covered, yet you can still use the other rug.

Pickle is 6ft 9- 7 ft rugs.

Thermatex were the best rugs ever for me they come up big anyway so are brilliant if you have big horses. They normally say go down a size but I didnt with pickles and it fits him perfectly

that's a damn good idea! would it matter having an outdoor under another outdoor as I've only ever had stable rugs on under an outdoor rug? Thermatex love em
grin.gif
he's in a 6'9" and they are plenty big enough on him, so treated myself to a lightweight one for the summer as the normal one is too thick then.
ETS: would it be better to put the 7'3" rug over the top of his 7' rug rather than under it?

Hmmm, sounds familiar!! I luuurve horseware rugs and have several for both horses, however I have had to give up and admit the new shape 'wug' ones with leg arches etc just don't fit my 17.1id. He has an old original green rambo
smile.gif
- coming up 12 yo and still going strong, and an old style purple 'wug (was a plus, but trashed the neck soooo....detaching of neck bit took place!!) and these are brilliant, but try as I might his luverly shiny 7ft brick red wug plus just doesn't fit. I've decided its down to big shoulders , just seems to pull up over the bum when they graze
shocked.gif
I gave up and bought a WB Taka in 6'9" its hugely warm and massive !! is on tightest adjustment at the front and still slightly too big on shoulders!! (would advise buying a bib with them though as I found it rubbed his shoulders)

has your ID got a huge neck as well as Pidge is huge at the front! so glad its not just me that has this problem (sorry) with horseware rugs, tried him in Higgs 7' fal rug and that had no room at the front at all. He wears a bib anyway as with his shoulders they tend to rub a bit.

thanks Jess, I have a rambo duo and the outer rug is 100g so may well use that under his mediumweight rug but think I need a sheet in 7'3 to go under the main rug. thanks ever so much for the advice

He doesn't have a huge neck for him - but he is a h/w id not the modern type.On the Wug i all the same found I was having to leave the adjustments as wide as poss - on a grey this was far from ideal!! (interesting dirt strip under neck!!
grin.gif
) Trying to remember how much room there was in his Taka on the neck , he is currently roughed off due to injury so not using this year, but I could have a measure up tonight and post measurements tomorrow if that would help. Also would like to add these are mega deep rugs - and actually meet in the middle underneath him (!!!) thats quite an achievement on him!!

snap, there is a nice wide gap where the neck cover should meet! That would be great if you didn't mind as now I think on it I had to get rid of some other rugs that had a built in neck cover as I couldn't even get the straps anywhere near fastening! How does the taka cope being cleaned as a friend said they weren't very good?

Hi - right......measurements taken last night....depth at centre by fastening, top to bottom 23" (so circumference 46-48") have to say I remembered last night
ooo.gif
that after getting this rug i decided it would have been a better idea to get the standard neck and a separate neck cover in this design, as the neck covers look bigger. Torcs neck is very deep but not cresty and it does fit him but wouldn't take anything much larger.
My Taka has come up as new when proffessionally cleaned - and we are talking about a pale colour which had been used on a mud monster
tongue.gif
- seek out muddiest mud and dive in
smile.gif
- kind of a guy!!!! He comes in with mud dripping off his forelock soooo.......

thank you so much for taking the measurements for me
grin.gif
I will be taking my tape measure to the yard tonight to measure Pidge. I watched him in the field today and I suppose the rug isn't that bad, as long as it doesn't rain or get very windy
tongue.gif
but I think the reason it comes up short is that it fits very snug round the shoulders so sits high up front.
