Rug doctoring question

Ok, I;m going to sound like a total tight g*t here, but I really cant afford any new rugs, so...........This is what I currently have and want to do - will it work?

2 x MW landa turnouts (6'9")
2 x MW Taka Stable rugs (6'6" and 7') with neck attachments
1 x MW neck cover (Medium and currently ripped inside)

I am planning that if is is cold enough to warrant it he wil have a stable rug under his MW, but I will have the Next rug on if I do that. Next rug is clip fastening, but its almost 2 years old and despite the clips being close to the material the end flips up and it gets a bit wet! So, I am planning to get some heavy duty velcro (double sided stuffy) and run the soft bit around the neck of the rug in a fashion that it will stick ip about what 1.5/2" and then have 2 pieces of the grabby side on the neck rug - thus making a seal.

Can anyone see what I mean? Has anyone done it?? If so how hard was it?? I can sew rather well and have in the past repaired rugs rather well if I do say so, but I just wanted to know if anyone has doctored their rugs before?

I know it will be an effort, but I currently cant even afford the £55 Full neck MW that I have seen on ECW. Although I am considering starving myself to get it. I have also put ads up for 2nd hand ones. Not trusting Ebay as I bought one off their before and it was not waterproof and literally fell apart at the seams!
 
i repair and reproof my battered old rugs too, they last a good few years if you can be bothered to sew them don't they

I would love to know if it works too. I have a MW with detachable neck that I have not even used this year as the neck cover blows up. My rainsheet is the same. I bought a full neck MW and HW as I didnt think of your idea

looks good to me, velcro keeps turn out socks on in boggy mud, so should work fine for attaching a neck rug.

*duh* so the neck rug would tuck into the body rug?
 
nope, it would overlap as it should, but instead of being attached with clips it would be velcroed on. Clips are usually (as I seem to see) attached to elastic, so over time they get loose and the wind flips the now floppy lower part and I also found that rain would get up there when he put his back to the wind/rain.

It has probably been tested by loads of rug companies, but I figure what the hell.

I should point out that I have a large neck cover, so it will not be tight at all on his neck when he puts his head down, and I am planning to leave velcro off the bottom area.

BUT.....I am also looking at other nect rugs to see if they are more rigid - as the ridigity is a problem that is making it flop up.

What I really want is a Full Face neck rug!!
 
how about....... adding 3 d rings to the neck of the rug and then fixing them on with velcro straps ( or ties) like other rugs do..... THEN fix the vecro on the rug & neck cover inbetween the d rings. This should stop the neck cover flipping up or moving.

(this is a cunning plan that I am trying out!)
 
I sewed 2 neck covers onto 2 old rugs and it worked realy well. You sew the seam on the edge of the neck rug onto the seam on the edge of the rug without a neck, (with the neck rug lieing outside to outside with the rug while you are sewing) you only need to do it in 3 places, the neck cover then sort of puffs out (like the hood on a humans coat) where it is joined but you need this to give some flexability or the horse just stretches and rips the neck cover off.............sorry very complicated to explain !
 
OR..........I did have a strange arrangement with a surcingle and jodpur clips one year (to keep the neck cover from gaping) but that was a bit complicated, so I thought next time of trying to put a very light (cheap !) cotton sheet over the rug and edge of the neck cover to keep the neck cover from flipping over............but then your horse would be wearing 3 rugs !
Basicly whoever designed these neck covers has never considered what a horse can get up to in its rug !
 
I was looking at a detachable rug yesterday (I have a barely controlled rug fetish and had given my OH the slip) and it was connected by plastic zips....would having, say three zips work do you think? Might be more secure than velcro?
